Chapter 1 - The Weight of Illusions

The heavy front door clicked shut with a metallic finality that sent a shiver through the high-end modern living room. Maya stood in the center of the entryway, her posture rigidly upright, clad in a crisp white button-down shirt and a tailored black blazer suit that commanded absolute authority. Her high heels clicked against the hardwood floor as she balanced a rolling suitcase, her stern, controlling gaze sweeping over the scene of domestic chaos before her.
On the white sofa, Marcus sat comfortably in a worn beige t-shirt and faded blue shorts, his mouth half-full of greasy takeout noodles. Beside him, Chloe lounge-wrapped in an expensive beige silk robe, lazily scrolling through her phone while digging into a cardboard container of spring rolls. They looked like royalty presiding over an estate they owned, completely unbothered by the fact that every single luxury around them belonged entirely to Maya.
From the open kitchen, the heavy scent of simmering broth drifted into the air. Evelyn, a fifty-year-old nanny whose face was slick with exhaustion and sweat, stirred a massive pot on the stove while a one-year-old toddler remained securely strapped to her aching back, fussing softly.
Maya did not hesitate. She strode past the lounging couple without a single glance, marched straight into the kitchen, and smoothly unclipped the safety straps, lifting the crying baby into her own arms. Evelyn gasped in pure shock, her tired eyes widening as she whispered, "Miss Maya, you're back early..."
Without missing a beat, Maya turned on her heel, marched toward the hallway smart-home panel, and pressed the master blackout switch. Instantly, the living room lights flickered off and the blaring television went dead, plunging Marcus and Chloe into sudden, jarring darkness.
Marcus jumped up from the sofa, knocking his takeout box onto the pristine white rug with a furious shout, "What the hell is wrong with you, Maya? Are you insane?"
Maya clutched the baby tightly against her chest, her voice cutting through the dark living room with terrifying calm.
"I gave you the lifestyle you can actually afford."
Marcus took a step forward, his chest heaving with righteous indignation as he pointed a finger at her. "Afford? This is our home too, Maya! You don't just walk in here and plunge us into darkness like we're squatters!"
"Squatters is an accurate description," Maya replied, her tone dropping an octave colder. "Everything in this house—the couch you're sitting on, the food you're eating, the nanny taking care of my child while you play housewife—is paid for by my sweat."
Chloe stood up slowly, clutching her robe tightly around her, her voice dripping with calculated venom. "Oh, stop being such a corporate tyrant, Maya. We’re family. Marcus is your brother, and I’m his fiancée. Families share resources."
"Families earn resources," Maya snapped back, her eyes narrowing as she stepped closer to the edge of the kitchen counter. "You haven't paid a single utility bill in eight months. And Marcus hasn't held a steady job since the Clinton administration."
Marcus scoffed, running a hand over his close-shaved head. "I am between entrepreneurial ventures! You have no idea what it takes to build a modern brand."
"I know exactly what it takes, Marcus, because I've been funding your imaginary brand for three years," Maya said, her voice dangerously quiet. "And today, the funding stops."

Chloe’s expression shifted from arrogant dismissal to sudden, calculated panic as she exchanged a frantic, terrified glance with Marcus.
