Chapter 13 - The Shadow in the Guest Suite

The live security feed on Maya’s monitor flickered as the smart lock on the guest suite door blinked from solid red to a bright, pulsing blue. Someone was running an active brute-force decryption algorithm from inside the house.
"Cipher, Ghost, hold position," Maya typed rapidly into the encrypted terminal. "I have an active local intrusion in progress."
She didn't call the police. She didn't call private security. She knew from the speed of the digital override that whoever was inside the guest suite was a professional ghost—someone who had likely slipped back through the service door while Marcus and Chloe made their chaotic exit.
Maya unlocked the top drawer of her executive desk, sliding her hand inside until her fingers wrapped around the cold, checkered grip of a licensed, legally registered compact firearm—a weapon she had kept hidden since her days negotiating high-risk acquisitions in volatile foreign markets. She pulled it out, checked the magazine with a practiced click, and rose silently from her chair.
She opened her office door an inch, peering out into the dimly lit second-floor hallway. The house was dead silent, save for the faint, rhythmic hum of the HVAC system.
She crept down the grand staircase, her high heels removed to ensure absolute silence, stepping barefoot across the hardwood floors of the foyer. The glow from the downstairs security panel cast long, angular shadows across the living room rug.
As she approached the closed door of the guest suite, she saw a faint sliver of blue light spilling out from underneath the threshold. The door was unlocked.
Maya raised the firearm, keeping her posture rigid and controlled, her stern CEO expression replaced by the absolute focus of a seasoned combatant. With a sudden, explosive kick, she swung the guest suite door wide open, stepping across the threshold with the weapon leveled directly at the center of the room.
The room was completely empty.
The queen-sized bed was unmade, the closet doors stood half-open, and a pile of discarded clothes lay on the floor where Marcus and Chloe had hastily packed. But sitting directly in the center of the mahogany writing desk was a sleek, military-grade terminal laptop plugged directly into the wall outlet, its screen glowing with green cascading code lines.
And taped to the laptop keyboard was a small, handwritten note on a piece of hotel stationery.
Maya walked forward slowly, keeping her gun raised as she scanned the shadows behind the heavy velvet curtains. Finding no one, she stepped up to the desk and looked down at the note.
Written in neat, sharp cursive were five words: YOU'RE TOO LATE, DIRECTOR.
