Chapter 7 - The Sugar Shockwave

The instant the peppermint-infused marshmallow touched Leo’s tongue, a violent sensory explosion rocked his entire world. The violent collision of blistering jalapeño heat, sugary sweetness, and minty toothpaste flavor sent a shockwave straight up to his brain. His eyes bulged wide open, his small face turning a brilliant shade of crimson that rivaled his onesie.

For a horrifying second, Leo couldn't breathe. His mouth was trapped in a sticky, minty paralysis.

ViewerCount: 1.2M... 1.5M... 2.8M! Vance chanted, his eyes glued to his tablet screen as the numbers skyrocketed into the stratosphere. "Look at the engagement velocity! They love the pain! They live for the suffering!"

Marcus slammed his fist onto the table, rattling the ketchup bottles and salt shakers. "Enough! The kid gave you his engagement! Turn off the lockdown before he goes into anaphylactic shock from industrial candy canes!"

Leo swallowed hard, a heroic, full-body shudder shaking his frame as the cursed bite finally slid down his throat. He gasped for air, coughing lightly as a tear slipped down his cheek. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, looking up at Vance with a gaze so fiercely determined that even the ruthless sponsor took an involuntary half-step back.

"Did..." Leo coughed, his voice raspy and sweet-smelling. "Did that get enough... comments?"

Vance stared at his tablet, his expression shifting from detached amusement to genuine, stunned disbelief. The holographic viewer icons had multiplied into a blinding storm of cascading light. The chat log was moving so fast individual words were indistinguishable, blurring into a solid wall of glowing neon text.

"Unbelievable," Vance whispered, scrolling frantically through the data streams. "Not only did engagement break the server, but a secondary financial tier has been unlocked. A super-chat donation wave just hit."

Leo swayed slightly on his feet, the sugar crash beginning to loom like a heavy grey fog over his consciousness. "Does that mean... I get the real pizza now?"

Before Vance could answer, the restaurant’s ceiling speakers hissed violently, and a deep, automated robotic voice echoed through the crimson-lit room.

SYSTEM ALERT: Tier Two challenge unlocked. The subject must now confront the architect of the algorithm.

The floor beneath Marcus’s table suddenly groaned, shifting horizontally with a low, mechanical grinding noise. The checkered linoleum parted down the middle, splitting open to reveal a hidden hydraulic elevator rising slowly from the subterranean darkness below.

As the platform ascended, a figure stepped out from the shadows, shrouded in a heavy velvet cloak that trailed across the floor. The newcomer wore a sleek, silver-plated virtual reality visor that completely obscured their face, glowing with a soft, pulsing neon outline.

Marcus instinctively planted his feet, his muscles bulging as he prepared for a physical confrontation. "Who goes there? Identify yourself!"

The cloaked figure raised a single, slender hand, silencing Marcus with a gesture. When they spoke, their voice was altered by a deep, digital modulator that sounded like a chorus of thousands of internet commenters speaking simultaneously.

"Welcome, little patriot," the Architect modulated smoothly. "You have survived the sugar storm. But to claim the ultimate slice of mozzarella, you must answer the riddle of the dead link."
