Chapter 4 - The Shattered Porcelain

The sharp crash of the white plastic plate echoing through the quiet restaurant felt like a thunderclap. Leo stared in sheer disbelief at the white shards scattered across the dirty floorboards. His mind went completely blank, the foundational anchor of his entire negotiation strategy destroyed in a single, callous motion. The American flag on his onesie seemed to burn against his skin, a cruel mockery of freedom and triumph.
"Hey!" Marcus roared, his massive frame surging forward as he grabbed Vance by the lapel of his trench coat, lifting the smaller man an inch off the floor with effortless strength. "That plate was part of the canonical setup! You don't just break props off-script, Vance! We have a continuity director to answer to!"
Vance didn't flinch. He merely smiled, his grey eyes locked onto Marcus’s furious glare with chilling composure. "Continuity is dead, Marcus. Real-time disruption is the new meta. Watch the metrics spike."
With a flick of his wrist, Vance spun his tablet around, shoving the glowing screen directly into Marcus’s line of sight. Marcus paused, his grip loosening just slightly on the trench coat lapel. On the display, a live ticker was spinning frantically upward. Real-time comments were cascading down the screen in a blur of neon text.
User_99: WHO BROKE THE BABY'S PLATE?!
PizzaKing42: THIS IS RIGGED! GIVE THE KID HIS PEPPERONI!
CyberMommy: I’m calling the authorities, this is emotional abuse for clout!
AlgorithmGod: +14,000 shares in two seconds. Keep filming!
Marcus slowly lowered Vance back to the floor, his face a mask of conflicted professional pride and lingering disgust. He glanced down at Leo, who was now staring at the broken pieces of his plate with a look of profound, soul-crushing devastation that transcended mere acting. The toddler’s shoulders shook with a silent, heavy sob.
"You went too far," Marcus muttered, though his voice lacked its previous conviction.
"I went viral," Vance corrected smoothly, adjusting his lapel with practiced arrogance. He turned his attention back to Leo, crouching down so his eyes were level with the weeping child. His voice softened into an eerie, hypnotic cadence. "Listen to me, little patriot. Your plate is gone. Your innocence is shattered. But your comment section is currently exploding across three continents. You are trending worldwide."
Leo wiped his face with a chubby hand, sniffing heavily. "I don't care about the world," he whispered, his voice cracking with raw, heartbreaking honesty. "I just wanted the cheese to stretch."
"The cheese will stretch," Vance promised, pointing a finger toward the kitchen pass-through behind the counter. "When you earn it. And your next trial begins right now."

Vance tapped his tablet once more. A loud, jarring mechanical chime rang out through the restaurant’s public address system. The neon lights flickered violently, cycling from white to a deep, ominous crimson. The front doors locked shut with a heavy, echoing thud, sealing them inside.
