The interior of the commercial kitchen was bathed in the hellish, pulsing red and gold light radiating from the open door of the massive stone pizza oven. The heat pouring out of the brick cavity was immense, carrying the sharp, sweet scent of burning oak wood, melted mozzarella, and ozone.

Marcus carried Leo into the kitchen, his boots crunching on flour-dusted tiles. Vance followed closely behind, clutching his broken tablet like a shield against the supernatural storm. The elderly woman stood by the oven door, holding a wooden pizza peel loaded with a final, unbaked disc of dough.

"What does this mean?" Marcus demanded, shielding Leo’s face from the blistering heat with his forearm. "Are we burning the network down?"

"We are completing the loop," the old woman answered calmly, turning to face them. Her eyes reflected the roaring flames inside the brick oven. "To sever a digital tether of this magnitude, the host must make a final, irrevocable choice. He must bake his own history into the crust."

Leo lifted his head from Marcus’s shoulder, wiping his tear-stained cheeks with the back of his hand. The glowing neon lines on his American flag onesie had faded into a warm, comforting amber hue. He looked at the wooden peel, then up at the roaring fire inside the stone oven.

"Will there be cheese?" Leo asked, his voice small, earnest, and completely devoid of fear.

The old woman smiled warmly. "More than you can possibly imagine, little patriot."

Marcus knelt slowly, setting Leo down onto a clean wooden stool near the counter. He placed his heavy, calloused hands on the toddler’s shoulders, looking deep into his big hopeful eyes one last time.

"You're the bravest content creator I've ever seen, kid," Marcus said, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. "Whatever happens next, you earned your slice."
