Chapter 8 - The Trust Fund Loophole

Arthur Vance leaned against the edge of the mahogany table, right beside the silver slow cooker, steadying his weight on his cane. The remaining board members watched him in tense silence.
"What do you mean about the trust fund, Arthur?" Julian asked, wiping a hand across his forehead.
"Your mother wasn't just hiding charity funds in Account 409," Arthur explained, his voice gravelly and low. "She set up a contingency contingency trust. If she was ever indicted for federal crimes, the entire portfolio was programmed to automatically transfer to a single, designated beneficiary outside the family."
Chloe frowned, her instincts instantly flaring up. "An offshore beneficiary? Who holds the keys?"
"That's the twist," Arthur said, pulling a digital tablet from his overcoat and tapping the screen. "Victoria wrote the contingency clause five years ago, right after your father passed away, Chloe. She named the sole legal heir of the entire Sterling estate..." He paused, looking directly at Chloe. "...as you."
Julian stepped back, his eyes widening in absolute shock. "What? My mother named Chloe as the heir to her entire estate?"
"That makes zero sense," Chloe said, shaking her head firmly. "Why would the woman who destroyed my family and tried to ruin my life hand me her empire?"
"Because of a obscure New York inheritance law," Arthur replied, turning the tablet around to show them the legal code. "Under colonial-era statutes still recognized in civil court, if a corporate entity acquires another company through proven fraud, the defrauded party’s immediate descendent holds a prior claim to all accumulated assets—surpassing biological heirs in criminal forfeiture cases."
Chloe stared at the glowing screen, the sheer magnitude of the revelation washing over her. The $200 grocery challenge, the absurd stacks of instant ramen, the grand ballroom confrontation—it had all converged into a bizarre legal singularity.
"She didn't do it out of kindness," Chloe realized aloud. "She thought she was untouchable. She put my name on the contingency trust as a legal loophole to shield the assets from federal seizure, assuming she'd never be caught."
"And now she's caught," Julian said, a bitter smile touching the corner of his mouth. "Which means you legally own everything. The hotels, the foundation, the accounts... everything."
"Not yet," a sharp voice interrupted from the doorway.
Everyone turned to see a stern-looking man in a tailored gray suit striding into the ballroom, holding a thick leather briefcase. It was Harrison Cole, Victoria’s personal executor and chief legal advisor.
"Mr. Cole," Arthur said stiffly. "I thought you were detained with the accountants."

"I posted bail," Harrison said smoothly, walking up to the table. He looked at Chloe with a predatory smirk. "You think you've won, young lady. But Victoria left one final instruction in the physical vault box—and it requires a physical signature from Julian to invalidate your claim entirely."
