Chapter 10 - The Broken Pen

Julian’s hand hovered above the signature line of the dark blue leather-bound document. The silver fountain pen caught the harsh glare of the crystal chandeliers, casting a cold gleam across the table stacked with cup noodles. Harrison Cole leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with greedy anticipation, practically holding his breath.

"Make the right choice, Julian," Harrison urged quietly. "Save what's left of your family's dignity."

Julian pressed the nib of the pen down onto the heavy parchment. The paper crinkled slightly under the pressure. But instead of signing his name, Julian pressed down harder—so hard that the gold nib bent sharply against the page, splitting the metal in two and leaking a thick pool of black ink across the signature line.

Harrison recoiled as if struck. "Are you out of your mind? That was a binding legal instrument!"

"It was a forgery trap," Julian said calmly, dropping the ruined pen onto the table. He looked the attorney dead in the eye. "My mother never used a fountain pen with a family crest. She thought those were too sentimental. That pen belonged to my grandfather—the man she forced out of this company twenty-five years ago."

Harrison’s face drained of color. He stammered, scrambling to close the leather briefcase. "That’s... that’s completely irrelevant to the contract!"

"It’s entirely relevant," the federal investigator said, stepping forward from the shadows near the ballroom doors. She signaled to two agents behind her. "Harrison Cole, you are under arrest for conspiracy to obstruct justice and fabricating corporate documents under duress."

Harrison spun around toward the exit, but the federal agents were already blocking his path, their hands resting on their utility belts. As the cold metal cuffs clicked around Harrison’s wrists, he shot one last venomous glare at Chloe.

"You think you've beaten Victoria," Harrison snarled as he was dragged away. "She left a contingency plan even I didn't know about. The board will tear you apart tomorrow morning!"

The double doors slammed shut once more, leaving Julian, Chloe, and Arthur Vance alone in the grand ballroom. The silence that followed felt heavy, laden with the wreckage of a corrupt dynasty.

Julian exhaled a long, shaky breath, running a hand through his short brown hair. He looked down at the ruined pen and the stained document. "Well. I guess I won't be needing this tuxedo anymore."

Chloe offered a small, genuine smile, her arms uncrossing as she stepped closer to him. "You handled that better than I expected. For a second, I thought you were actually going to sign."

"Never," Julian said softly, looking into her eyes. "My mother taught me how to put up a front, but you taught me what matters."

Arthur Vance cleared his throat gently, tapping his cane against the marble floor. "Before you two celebrate your victory over the legal department, you need to look at what Harrison left behind in the bottom compartment of that briefcase."
