Chapter 1 - The Crystal Ballroom Confrontation

The crystal chandeliers of the Manhattan Grand Plaza cast a cold, blinding glare over the mahogany table. Victoria Sterling, resplendent in her structured dark purple suit and twin diamond star brooches, shook with absolute fury. Her severe updo seemed to tighten her expression into a mask of pure aristocratic disdain.

"What is the meaning of this insult?" Victoria demanded, her voice slicing through the heavy, champagne-scented air of the ballroom.

Across the table stood Chloe, her twenty-year-old blonde hair falling in soft waves against her light purple tweed jacket. Chloe crossed her arms, her posture entirely relaxed, embodying a calm that only deepened Victoria’s rage. Julian, Victoria’s twenty-year-old son, hovered nervously behind the mountain of instant ramen, his dark blue velvet tuxedo jacket straining against his anxious movements.

"Your son gave $200," Chloe said evenly, her tone devoid of any tremor. "I spent exactly $194."

"This is a mockery of our family name!" Victoria hissed, stepping closer. "You bring peasant food into a charity gala committee reveal?"

"You always said I figure things out," Chloe replied, her blue eyes locking steadily onto Victoria’s dilated, furious pupils.

Julian swallowed hard, stepping between them. "Mom, please. Let her explain the logistics before you make a scene in front of the board members."

"There is nothing to explain!" Victoria shouted, her composure cracking. "She is a pauper trying to humiliate us!"

Chloe didn't flinch. Instead, she reached into the deep pocket of her tweed jacket, pulled out a heavily folded receipt, and laid it flat across the top of a beef-flavored cup noodle lid.

"Before you throw me out," Chloe whispered, "you might want to read the name of the foundation that actually owns this hotel."
