Chapter 7 - The Yellowed Envelope

Chloe’s fingers hovered just above the yellowed envelope before she carefully picked it up. The paper was worn at the edges, bearing the faint scent of old cedar and pipe tobacco—her father's distinct scent. She pulled the flap open, sliding out a single sheet of heavy parchment covered in neat, hurried ledger entries.
"Where did you get this, Mr. Vance?" Chloe asked, her voice barely audible over the hum of the federal agents' equipment.
Arthur adjusted his glasses, his expression heavy with regret. "Your father gave it to me the night before his company collapsed. He knew Victoria was orchestrating a hostile takeover, but he trusted the board to protect the minority shareholders. He didn't know I was outvoted by Victoria’s block."
Julian stepped closer, peering over Chloe’s shoulder at the ledger. "What does it prove?"
"It proves premeditated fraud," the federal investigator said, leaning over to inspect the document. She traced a line of signatures at the bottom. "This isn't just a hostile takeover. This is a forged bank authorization. Victoria didn't just ruin your father's business, Chloe—she forged his signature to drain the company pension fund into her personal offshore accounts."
Victoria’s arrogant facade finally cracked, a flicker of genuine panic flashing across her eyes. "That document is inadmissible! It’s hearsay from a failed businessman!"
"It’s signed by three independent witnesses who were coerced into silence," the investigator countered sharply. She turned to the agents holding Victoria’s arms. "Add aggravated grand larceny and corporate forgery to the charges."
Two federal agents escorted Victoria toward the grand ballroom doors. As she passed Chloe, the older woman paused, leaning in close enough for only the two of them to hear.
"You may have the papers, girl," Victoria whispered with venomous calm, "but you’ll never see a dime of that money back. The offshore accounts are locked in a trust you can legally never touch."
Chloe didn't flinch. She met Victoria’s glare with absolute stillness. "Trusts can be dismantled, Victoria. Just like empires."
The heavy oak doors closed behind the disgraced matriarch, leaving a profound, suffocating silence in the ballroom. Julian stood amidst the sea of cup noodles, looking completely lost. His velvet tuxedo jacket, once a symbol of high-society privilege, now felt like a prison uniform.
"I'm sorry," Julian whispered, staring at the floor. "I had no idea what she was doing behind closed doors."
"I know you didn't, Julian," Chloe said softly, slipping the yellowed envelope into her tweed jacket pocket.

Arthur Vance pushed himself up from his chair, leaning heavily on his cane. He looked at the two young adults with a somber expression. "There is one more thing you need to know about that trust fund before the courts freeze it completely."
