Chapter 8: The Weight of Expectations

Later that evening, after the corporate board meeting had successfully concluded and the markets had closed for the day, Victoria remained in her private office on the fiftieth floor. The city lights below twinkled like a vast field of scattered diamonds, mirroring the shattered glass from the ballroom that felt like a lifetime ago. She stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, holding a glass of sparkling water, lost in deep contemplation.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and Eleanor stepped inside, closing it quietly behind her. The older woman walked over and stood beside her daughter, gazing out at the magnificent urban landscape that their family had built over three generations.

“You handled the board masterfully today,” Eleanor said softly, breaking the comfortable silence. “Harrison was practically shaking in his bespoke Italian shoes. You remind me so much of your grandfather when he took over the steel mills.”

Victoria took a slow sip of her water before responding. “Grandfather believed that strength meant never showing vulnerability. But I’ve learned that true strength is knowing exactly when to expose your vulnerabilities to draw out your enemies.”

Eleanor nodded thoughtfully. “You knew Julian was stealing from us long before he pushed Lily, didn't you?”

Victoria turned her head to look at her mother, her expression softening just a fraction. “I suspected it six months after the wedding. His lifestyle didn't align with his declared assets. I had our private forensic accountants quietly monitor every transaction he made. I could have exposed him a year ago, Mother.”

“Why wait?” Eleanor asked, genuine curiosity in her eyes. “Why let it go on so long?”

“Because a thief with money is just a thief,” Victoria replied coldly. “A thief who believes he is winning will eventually become arrogant. He will try to eliminate anyone standing in his way. Julian’s ambition made him reckless. If I had exposed him quietly a year ago, he would have found a loophole, hired high-priced defense lawyers, and walked away with a multi-million-dollar severance package. I didn't just want him out of the company, Mother. I wanted to ensure he could never touch my family again.”

Eleanor placed a gentle hand on Victoria’s arm. “You protected Lily and our legacy. But at what personal cost, Victoria? You’ve carried this immense burden in complete isolation.”

“Isolation is just another word for control,” Victoria said firmly, though her gaze drifted back to the sparkling skyline. “In our world, trust is a luxury we cannot afford to squander. Lily is my world now. Everything I built, everything I fought for, is to ensure she never has to look up at a man who thinks he can intimidate her.”
