Chapter 6: Healing Beneath the Surface

The afternoon light filtered through the stained-glass windows of the Vance estate's solarium, casting warm hues of amber and emerald across the white marble floor where the shattered glass had long since been swept away. Lily sat at a small wooden table, piecing together a complex jigsaw puzzle with quiet concentration. Her light purple dress was smooth and clean, her blonde hair tied back with a neat velvet ribbon. Kneeling beside her, Victoria handed her a puzzle piece, smiling softly as Lily successfully locked it into place.
The door opened softly, and Marcus stepped in, holding a leather portfolio under his arm. He walked over and crouched down next to Victoria, speaking in a low, controlled tone so as not to startle the child.
“The preliminary asset forfeiture has been signed off by the federal magistrate,” Marcus reported quietly. “Julian’s personal accounts, real estate holdings, and offshore investments have been successfully seized and redirected back into the Vance holding trust. Legally, he has zero recourse.”
Victoria nodded slowly, her expression remaining composed. “And his legal representation?”
“Appointed public defender,” Marcus replied with a faint shrug. “None of his high-society associates are willing to touch his case now that the embezzlement details are public. The media is painting him as a corporate grifter who overreached. The Vance name remains insulated, largely thanks to the narrative Mother and I coordinated with the PR firm this morning.”
“Good,” Victoria said, standing up and brushing off her trousers. She gestured for Marcus to follow her toward the far corner of the solarium, away from Lily’s earshot. “We cannot afford to let our guard down, Marcus. Julian was merely a symptom of a larger vulnerability in our security structure. If he managed to infiltrate our financial systems for three years without our immediate detection, others might try the same.”
Marcus looked serious, his professional instincts kicking in. “I’ve already initiated a complete cybersecurity overhaul. Every executive-level account is undergoing biometric re-verification, and external audits are scheduled quarterly from now on. No one gets in without multi-layered clearance.”
“Make sure the legal team drafts a permanent revision to the family bylaws,” Victoria added, her voice carrying absolute authority. “From now on, any marriage involving direct heirs requires an uncompromised prenuptial agreement vetted by our private investigators, regardless of public optics.”

“Done,” Marcus said, opening his portfolio and handing her a preliminary draft. “Victoria… you handled that situation in the ballroom with terrifying precision. I knew you were protective of Lily, but the way you neutralized Julian in seconds… it reminded me of Father.”
Victoria took the document, her dark eyes flashing with a sharp, complicated emotion. “Father taught us that survival in our world requires absolute control. Julian forgot that rule. He thought kindness was weakness, and he paid the ultimate price for his ignorance.”
