Chapter 7: Whispers in the Boardroom

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Vance Tower was designed to intimidate. Its walls were clad in dark imported walnut, and a massive glass table dominated the center of the room, overlooking the sprawling metropolis below. The senior members of the board sat in ergonomic leather chairs, their expressions tense as Victoria took her seat at the head of the table. Eleanor sat to her right, silent and observant, while Marcus operated the digital presentation screen at the front.
Victoria clasped her hands on the table, her dark eyes sweeping across the assembly of corporate executives who had spent years treating her as a secondary figurehead behind Julian.
“Gentlemen,” Victoria began, her voice carrying a crisp, resonant authority that commanded absolute silence. “As you are all acutely aware, the events of this past week necessitated a rapid restructuring of our executive leadership. Julian Vance is no longer associated with this corporation in any capacity, legal or financial.”
A middle-aged board member named Harrison adjusted his tie nervously. “Victoria, while we fully support the removal of illicit actors from our ranks, the sudden vacuum in our international operations division is causing mild fluctuations in our stock value. How do you propose we stabilize investor confidence before the quarterly earnings report next month?”
“By returning to our foundational principles, Harrison,” Victoria replied smoothly, gesturing to the screen behind Marcus. The display flickered to life, revealing a comprehensive restructuring plan that eliminated redundant shell corporations and redirected capital directly into domestic manufacturing and sustainable technology R&D.
“For the past three years,” Victoria continued, standing up and walking toward the screen, “this company allowed external interests to divert resources into speculative ventures that offered high short-term returns but compromised our long-term stability. That era is over. Every dollar of corporate revenue will henceforth be subjected to rigorous internal compliance audits, overseen directly by my office.”
Eleanor watched her daughter with a mixture of pride and quiet astonishment. For decades, Eleanor had believed that maintaining power required compromise and the subtle appeasement of male executives who dominated the industry. Victoria, however, was rewriting the rules entirely. She was not asking for a seat at the table; she was redesigning the entire room.
“Are there any objections to this restructuring?” Victoria asked, turning back to face the board, her gaze locking onto Harrison with an intensity that made him swallow hard and shake his head.

“None, Victoria,” Harrison murmured, quickly tapping his approval onto his digital terminal.
“Then the motion carries unanimously,” Victoria said, sitting back down. “The meeting is adjourned. Let us get to work.”
