Chapter 4: Unraveling the Web

The digital offices of Vance Industries hummed with quiet urgency as the morning trading session commenced. In his high-rise corner office, Julian frantically slammed his fingers against his keyboard, his face turning an alarming shade of pale as error messages flashed across his dual monitors. Account frozen. Authorization denied. Transfer rejected. He grabbed his desk phone and dialed his primary offshore associate in the Caymans, but the line rang endlessly before a prerecorded message stated that the number was no longer in service.

“Damn it!” Julian shouted, sweeping a stack of financial reports off his mahogany desk. They fluttered uselessly to the floor, joining the growing chaos of his professional life.

The heavy glass door of his office swung open without warning. Standing in the doorway was Marcus Vance, Victoria’s younger brother and the nominal head of corporate compliance, accompanied by two silent men in dark suits carrying federal badges. Marcus looked at Julian not with anger, but with profound disappointment.

“Pack your personal belongings, Julian,” Marcus said coldly. “The board held an emergency session at seven this morning. Your signature on the asset transfer documents was flagged by internal audit, and Victoria submitted the complete dossier on your embezzlement scheme directly to the federal prosecutor.”

Julian stood up slowly from his leather executive chair, his hands gripping the edge of the desk for support. “Marcus, you have to listen to me. Victoria is twisting things. She’s using her influence to railroad me out of the company because of a domestic dispute.”

“This isn't about last night in the ballroom,” Marcus replied, stepping further into the room and tossing a thick manila folder onto the desk. “This is about the twelve million dollars you systematically drained from the research and development fund over the past thirty-six months. You thought because you married into the family, you were untouchable. You forgot that the Vance family protects its own assets first, and right now, Lily and Victoria are the core of those assets.”

The two federal agents stepped forward, their movements precise and unyielding. One of them produced a pair of polished steel handcuffs, the metallic glint catching the harsh fluorescent office lighting. Julian’s breath hitched. He realized with sudden, crushing clarity that there was no way out. The trap had been laid with meticulous patience, and he had walked directly into it.

“You can’t do this,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking as the agents gripped his arms firmly. “Eleanor will protect me. She knows about the restructuring plans.”

“Mother washed her hands of you the moment you embarrassed her in front of the board yesterday,” Marcus said flatly. “She realized you were a liability. Goodbye, Julian.”

As the cold steel clicked around his wrists, Julian cast one last desperate glance out the panoramic window toward the skyline, knowing that his elaborate empire of deceit had finally crumbled into dust.
