Chapter 9: The Corridor Ambush

Elena and Julian didn't run—running invited panic, and panic invited mistakes. They moved with swift, controlled urgency toward the grand staircase of the townhouse. The heavy oak door at the base of the grand hall creaked open, followed by the unmistakable click of Arthur’s heavy signet ring tapping against the brass doorknob.

He’s back early, Julian thought instantly. Beatrice’s timing had failed, or Arthur had forgotten something critical in his study.

“Hide!” Julian hissed, shoving Elena gently toward the recessed alcove behind the towering grandfather clock on the landing.

Elena slipped behind the heavy brass pendulum just as Arthur’s heavy footsteps echoed up the curved staircase. He was moving fast, his face dark with sudden suspicion. He must have noticed the subtle data ping on his phone indicating his study’s digital sensor had been queried, or perhaps Beatrice had managed to stall him just long enough for him to realize something was deeply wrong.

Arthur reached the top of the landing, his eyes darting frantically down the hallway toward his study. His breathing was heavy, ragged with fury. He pulled the study door open and stepped inside, only to emerge ten seconds later, his face contorted into an expression of murderous rage. He realized the wall safe was wide open and the primary ledger was gone.

“Elena!” Arthur roared, his voice shaking the plaster on the walls.

He spun around on the landing, his eyes scanning the corridor. He spotted the hem of Elena’s emerald coat—she had forgotten to tuck the fabric completely behind the grandfather clock in her haste.

Arthur lunged across the landing like a striking viper, his massive hand wrenching the grandfather clock aside with a violent crash of wood and brass. Elena stumbled backward, hitting the wall, while Julian stepped out of the adjacent doorway, his fist clenched and ready.

“It’s over, Arthur,” Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute authority.

Arthur ignored Julian completely. His eyes were fixed on Elena with a feral intensity. He reached out, his fingers centimeters from her throat once more, driven by a psychotic compulsion to silence her permanently before she could reach the board meeting.
