Chapter 3: The Second Choke

Arthur straightened his lapel with a slow, deliberate movement, his eyes dark with humiliated rage. The push had drawn the discrete attention of a few lingering waiters near the service doors, but the crowd at large was still keeping a respectful, terrified distance. No one dared intervene when the Sterling and Vance families collided. Arthur’s face flushed beneath his pale complexion, the veins at his temples throbbing visibly.
Before Julian could step forward to place himself entirely between Arthur and the pregnant woman, Arthur closed the distance with predatory speed. He completely ignored the older man’s commanding presence, driven by a manic need to reassert dominance. With a rough, sweeping motion, Arthur brushed past Julian’s outstretched arm and grabbed Elena by the throat once more, slamming her back against the same cold marble pillar.
Elena gasped, a sharp, choking sound escaping her lips as her airway was cut off for the second time. Deep emotional tension filled the cavernous room, suffocating everyone within twenty feet. Her fingernails clawed weakly at Arthur’s sleeve, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and desperate resolve.
“You think an old man can save you?” Arthur hissed, his voice trembling with suppressed fury inches from her ear.
Julian spun around, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson. The sheer audacity of Arthur re-engaging physical violence after being physically rebuffed broke every rule of elite decorum. Beatrice let out a muffled cry from across the room, lowering her hands from her mouth as tears welled in her eyes. She started walking toward them, her glittering beige heels clicking furiously against the stone.

“Arthur, stop this insanity!” Beatrice’s voice cut through the heavy air, trembling but desperate. “Everyone is watching!”
Arthur didn’t even glance at his wife. His entire world had narrowed down to the woman beneath his palm and the papers burning a hole in his pocket. He leaned in closer, his intense gaze boring into Elena’s soul, demanding total submission. But Elena, despite the lack of oxygen making her vision spotty at the edges, refused to break. She locked her eyes onto his, communicating a silent message that terrified him more than any legal threat ever could: she knew his secret, and she was going to expose it all.
