Chapter 13: The Final Stand

Arthur staggered into the boardroom, his heavy leather shoes clicking erratically against the polished concrete floor. Several board members recoiled instinctively, whispering in alarm at his disheveled appearance. Arthur didn't look at the directors; his entire field of vision was locked onto Elena standing beside the mahogany conference table with the open ledger.

“You think a book of lies is going to destroy forty years of my life?” Arthur rasped, his voice raw, cracking with exhaustion and fury. He lunged forward, but before he could take three steps, two burly corporate security guards in dark suits intercepted him, grabbing him firmly by both arms and pinning him against the glass partition.

Arthur struggled violently, thrashing against their grip like a trapped animal. “Get your hands off me! I am the CEO of this company! You’re firing a ghost!”

“You are a criminal, Arthur,” Julian said calmly, standing up from his chair. He walked slowly around the table until he stood directly in front of the raging man. Julian’s face was a mask of cold, unyielding authority. “Your reign of terror over this family and this corporation is officially over. The police are waiting downstairs in the lobby.”

Arthur stopped struggling for a fraction of a second, his chest heaving under his torn tuxedo jacket. He looked past Julian at the board members, whose faces were turned away in universal disgust and shame. No one offered to help him. No one even met his eyes. The loyalty he had commanded through fear and intimidation had evaporated the second his empire collapsed.

“You’ll ruin everything,” Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with a pathetic vulnerability that was far more terrifying than his rage. He looked at Elena, tears of frustrated humiliation finally welling in his bloodshot eyes. “We built this. You can't just take it away.”

“I didn't take it away, Arthur,” Elena said quietly, stepping forward just enough to look him directly in the eye. “You destroyed it yourself the moment you thought power gave you the right to break human lives.”

Arthur let out a ragged, defeated breath, his shoulders slumping as the last of his manic energy drained away. The security guards tightened their grip slightly, guiding him toward the private service elevator at the rear of the executive floor. Arthur didn't resist anymore. As the elevator doors slid open and swallowed him into the darkness of his descent, the heavy silence of the boardroom returned, profound and absolute.
