Chapter 4: The Shattered Glass

The sound of Beatrice’s heels stopping sharply a few feet away broke the hypnotic trance of the struggle. Julian did not wait for his daughter to intervene further. Recognizing that words were utterly useless against a cornered predator, Julian reached down to the silver tray he had miraculously managed to keep balanced in one hand throughout the scuffle. With a flick of his wrist, he hurled the second crystal glass directly at the marble floor beside Arthur’s leather shoes.

The glass exploded into a thousand glittering shards, the sharp crack echoing like a gunshot through the vaulted ballroom. The sudden, violent noise startled Arthur enough to break his focus. His grip on Elena’s throat slackened, giving her just enough space to violently wrench herself away from his grasp. She collapsed to her knees, coughing violently and clutching her stomach, while Beatrice immediately dropped to her side, wrapping a protective arm around her trembling shoulders.

“Get out,” Julian commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a register that brook no argument. He stepped directly between Arthur and the two women, his massive frame blocking any further approach. “You have crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed, Arthur. The board meeting tomorrow morning is going to be your execution, not ours.”

Arthur stood frozen for a moment, chest heaving, his tie slightly askew from Julian’s earlier shove. He looked down at the glittering shards of crystal surrounding his shoes, then up at Julian’s unyielding stance. He realized in that instant that the boardroom battle he had tried to preemptively win by force had now escalated into an outright war. The element of surprise was gone.

Without a single word of apology or concession, Arthur adjusted his cuffs, smoothed his tuxedo jacket, and turned on his heel. He walked away with measured, arrogant strides, disappearing through the mahogany double doors that led to the private exit.

Silence descended upon the immediate area, save for Elena’s ragged breathing. Beatrice was softly crying, rubbing circles into Elena’s back, while Julian stood sentinel, staring at the heavy doors long after they had swung shut. The night had changed everything, and the true battle for the Vance-Sterling legacy had only just begun.
