Chapter 9: The Last Innocent**

The afternoon sun broke through the gray clouds, casting warm golden beams across the mansion's manicured gardens. Lily was sitting on a stone bench near the rose bushes, humming a soft tune as she colored a new picture. Her nanny, Clara, stood nearby, watching over her with gentle vigilance.
Damon approached slowly, deliberately softening his heavy footsteps. He sat beside his niece on the cold stone, taking off his tailored suit jacket and draping it over her shoulders to shield her from the autumn breeze.
"What are you drawing now, little bird?" Damon asked, peering down at the fresh sheet of paper.
Lily smiled, holding up the drawing with pride. It wasn't clocks or medicine bottles this time. It was a bright yellow house with a white fence, surrounded by tall green trees, and two figures holding hands under a smiling sun—a tall man with dark hair and a little girl in a pink dress.
"It's our new home," Lily declared happily, pointing a crayon-stained finger at the paper. "Where there are no locked doors, and you don't have to stay awake all night."
A sudden ache gripped Damon's chest—a mixture of deep sorrow and profound gratitude. She had seen right through his stoic armor, understanding his hidden pain better than any adult ever could. "It's beautiful, Lily," Damon whispered, his voice trembling slightly as he kissed her forehead. "I promise you, you will have that house."
"Are you coming with me?" she asked, looking up with wide, innocent eyes that demanded absolute honesty.

Damon hesitated, swallowing the lump in his throat. "I have to finish some work first, sweetheart. But no matter where I am, I will always be watching over you."
