Chapter 2: Shadows in the Marble**

Victor did not reach for the pill. His hand dropped instinctively toward the tailored fabric of his jacket, but the distinct, metallic click of three suppressed firearms from the shadow of the archway stopped him dead. Marco, Damon’s younger enforcer, stepped out from the corridor, his weapon raised with cold precision.

"Damon, listen to me," Victor choked out, his facade cracking under the suffocating silence. "A five-year-old doesn't know what she’s looking at. The girl is confused. You’re going to throw away ten years of loyalty over a crayon doodle?"

"She doesn't know what poison is, Victor," Damon answered, standing up slowly. At six-foot-three, his presence dominated the expansive hall, casting an imposing silhouette against the warm glow of the crystal chandelier. "She only knows colors, numbers, and the truth. You taught me once that children and dead men never lie. Which one do you want to be tonight?"

The room seemed to shrink. Victor’s breathing turned shallow as beads of sweat formed along his temples. He knew Damon’s rule: once trust was severed, it could never be re-stitched. "They have my family, Damon," Victor whispered, the confession tearing out of him like jagged glass. "The Moretti syndicate. They took my brother’s boy from his school in Detroit. If I didn’t replace your digitalis with an overdose before midnight, they promised to send him back in pieces."

Damon walked around the table, his footsteps deliberate and devoid of haste. He stopped mere inches from Victor, staring straight into the man's terrified eyes. He saw the genuine agony of a desperate uncle, mirroring the fierce protective fire burning in his own chest.

"You should have come to me," Damon said softly. "You thought sacrificing me would save your nephew. But monsters like Moretti don't leave witnesses, Victor. The moment my heart stopped, your brother’s boy would have died anyway." Damon turned to Marco without blinking. "Disarm him. Lock him in the cellar under full guard. We don't execute a man for loving his family, but he will answer for putting mine at risk."
