Chapter 10: The Federal Threshold**

Forty-eight hours later, the grand dining room was stripped of its luxury. The crystal chandelier hung unlit, and the antique furniture was draped in white protective sheets. Federal agents, led by Special Agent Marcus Hayes of the Department of Justice, stood inside the foyer with warrants and evidence boxes.
Hayes was a veteran investigator who had hunted the Vance family for over fifteen years. He expected a siege, a standoff, or a squad of high-priced defense attorneys blocking every corridor. Instead, he found Damon Vance sitting alone at the bare mahogany table, two thick files resting in front of him.
"You're making this surprisingly easy, Vance," Hayes said cautiously, keeping his hand near his holster as his team secured the perimeter. "We have enough on Moretti to bury him under the prison. But your name is all over those Chicago docks."
"I know," Damon replied calmly, sliding the files across the table. "This folder contains the complete unencrypted records of every illicit shipment, every bribe, and every warehouse lease under my name since my brother died. Complete confessions, signed and notarized."
Hayes opened the folder, skimming the pages with mounting astonishment. "Why? A man in your position usually fights until the last appeal, or dies in a hail of bullets."
"A man in my position usually doesn't have something worth saving," Damon said, looking directly into the investigator's eyes. "I have one condition, Hayes. Not for my sentence, but for my brother's daughter. Full immunity for her trust fund, total privacy, and sealed records regarding her identity."

Hayes looked at the hardened mob boss, seeing not a ruthless kingpin, but a guardian who had willingly surrendered his crown to save a child's soul. "You have my word, Damon. The girl stays clean."
