Chapter 8 - Strike and Counter-Strike

The heavy steel wrench cut through the damp air with a terrifying hiss, aiming straight for Julian’s temple. Instinct honed by years of executive self-defense training took over. Julian ducked sharply beneath the arc of the swing, letting the momentum carry Marcus past him. With a swift, calculated pivot, Julian drove the heel of his palm upward into his cousin's collarbone.

Marcus grunted, stumbling hard against a rusted iron boiler, the wrench clattering loudly onto the concrete floor. But before Julian could follow up, Marcus recovered with surprising speed, lashing out with a vicious kick that caught Julian in the ribs and sent him sprawling into a pile of wooden crates. Splintered wood flew in all directions, kicking up a thick cloud of choking dust.

"Julian!" Elena cried out, darting past the struggling men.

Instead of fleeing toward the exit, Elena lunged directly for the control box mounted beside the heavy steel exit door. She slammed her palm against the manual emergency lever just as Marcus recovered his footing and turned toward her with a furious snarl.

"Stay out of this, you little—" Marcus barked, lunging across the room to grab her by the collar of her black-and-white French maid uniform.

Before Marcus's fingers could reach her, Elena pivoted sharply, using her momentum to swing the heavy, dust-covered brass fire extinguisher she had snatched from the wall bracket. With a dull, echoing thud, the heavy cylinder struck Marcus squarely across the shoulder, spinning him off balance.

Marcus stumbled backward, howling in pain as his arm went dead at his side. He tripped over the discarded wrench on the floor and crashed hard onto the concrete, hitting his head against the edge of a iron pallet. He lay motionless, breathing heavily, unconscious.

Julian pushed himself up from the splintered wood, coughing through the dust, holding his ribs where Marcus’s boot had connected. He limped over to Elena, who stood over the fallen security chief, her chest heaving, the red scratch on her cheek glowing brightly against her pale skin.

"Are you hurt?" Julian asked, his voice laced with genuine concern as he reached out a hand to steady her.

"I'm fine, Mr. Vance," Elena answered, wiping a smear of soot from her forehead with the back of her wrist. She pointed toward the exit door. "Look at the override panel."

Julian turned his gaze to the wall panel. The blinking red light had turned solid green, and the heavy pneumatic locks disengaged with a loud, satisfying hiss. The path to the outside world was finally open.

"We need to get to the main garage," Julian said, adrenaline surging back through his veins as he grabbed the heavy steel handle and pulled the door wide open. Cool morning sunlight flooded into the dim sub-basement for the first time in hours.

"We won't make it to the garage," a cold voice echoed from the sunlit courtyard outside.

Julian and Elena froze in the doorway.
