Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Foyer

The silence in the grand foyer became suffocating. The ticking of the antique grandfather clock against the far wall sounded like a drumbeat of impending doom. Julian stared down at the embroidered numbers visible in Elena's trembling grip, his expression shifting from corporate detachment to cold realization. He exchanged a fleeting, sharp glance with Evelyn, whose carefully maintained composure fractured for a fraction of a second.

"Where did you find this napkin, Elena?" Julian asked, his voice suddenly stripped of its previous hauteur, replaced by a dangerous, low intensity.

"It was tucked underneath the heavy sideboard in the west corridor, sir," Elena answered, her voice barely a whisper as she kept her gaze fixed on the marble floor. "Right outside your private study. It was left there deliberately, hours after the evening gala ended. Someone wanted me to find it first thing this morning."

Evelyn stepped closer, her cream-colored satin gown whispering softly against the stone. She leaned down slightly, her perfume—a sharp, expensive blend of jasmine and bergamot—wafting over the kneeling maid. "You expect us to believe that you stumbled upon confidential embassy property while dusting a baseboard? People do not simply misplace state documents inside table linens."

"I am telling the truth," Elena insisted, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, desperate defiance as she looked up at Evelyn. "I clean that hallway every single night. That napkin was not there at midnight. It appeared at four in the morning, right around the time the security cameras in the east wing experienced a scheduled blackout."

Julian stiffened. He had personally authorized the maintenance shutdown for the east wing cameras, a fact known to only three living people: himself, Evelyn, and his head of security, Marcus Vance, his own cousin. A cold knot formed in Julian's stomach. If Elena knew about the camera blackout, she had either witnessed something catastrophic or she was an operative far more dangerous than her humble uniform suggested.

"Who told you about the security blackout?" Julian demanded, stepping closer, his shadow falling completely over the kneeling woman.

Elena flinched, pulling the soiled cloth closer to her chest like a shield. "Nobody told me, Mr. Vance. I saw the monitor blue-screen in the security annex when I went to fetch the heavy-duty mop. The maintenance log was open on the screen, and your cousin’s signature was the last one entered."

Evelyn let out a sharp, incredulous breath. "Marcus? That is absurd. Marcus has managed our security protocols for a decade without a single infraction. Julian, do not listen to her manipulation. She is trying to deflect blame by casting suspicion on family."

"Family or not, the logs do not lie," Julian muttered, pulling out his sleek smartphone from his tailored vest pocket. He tapped the screen rapidly, bringing up the encrypted estate server. His face paled visibly as the decryption progress bar stalled at ninety-nine percent, locked out by an external override command originating from inside the house.

Elena watched him closely, her chest heaving as she swallowed the lump in her throat. "The override was not executed from the security room, sir. It was sent from the master bedroom terminal upstairs. While you and Miss Evelyn were asleep."

Julian stopped swiping. He raised his eyes slowly from his phone screen and locked his gaze onto Evelyn's face.
