Chapter 11 - Sirens at the Gates

The sleek black SUVs slammed to a halt around the perimeter of the helipad, kicking up clouds of white dust that mixed with the downdraft of the idling helicopter. Heavy doors flew open simultaneously, and a dozen federal agents in tactical gear poured out, weapons drawn and aimed squarely at Evelyn and her hired security detail.
"Federal Law Enforcement! Drop your weapons immediately!" shouted a commanding voice through a megaphone from the lead vehicle.
The two private contractors hired by Evelyn exchanged panicked glances. Within seconds, both men dropped their automatic rifles onto the pavement, raising their hands slowly in the air as federal agents swarmed them, forcing them to their knees against the concrete.
Evelyn stood paralyzed for a moment, the titanium briefcase slipping slightly from her gloved hand before she caught herself. She turned her head slowly to look at Julian, her expression shifting from absolute arrogance to a cold, venomous fury.
"You called them," Evelyn hissed through clenched teeth, her voice barely audible over the roar of the helicopter engine. "You set a secondary beacon."
"I didn't have to," Julian replied, standing tall despite his soot-stained suit and bruised ribs. "The moment Elena mentioned the weather station cameras, I realized the environmental bureau automatically syncs its data logs to the federal aviation database every six hours. The backup package was transmitted automatically at six o'clock this morning."
Elena stood quietly beside Julian, her hand finally releasing the soiled napkin in her pocket. She watched as the lead federal agent—a tall, stern-faced woman with iron-grey hair and a crisp uniform—strode across the tarmac toward them.
"Julian Vance?" the agent asked, flashing an official badge.
"Yes, Agent Miller," Julian replied, nodding respectfully. "I am the owner of this estate. The woman beside me, Evelyn Sterling, and her detained contractors have been systematically siphoning classified trade documents and executing an illegal corporate takeover using forged credentials."
Agent Miller turned her piercing gaze toward Evelyn, who stood rigidly beside the titanium briefcase. "Evelyn Sterling, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, industrial espionage, and conspiracy against national economic security. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
Evelyn slowly raised her chin, maintaining a chilling veneer of dignity even as the cold metal of handcuffs clicked around her wrists. "This is a gross misunderstanding of corporate restructuring. My legal counsel will have this dismissed before the end of the business day."
"Your legal counsel won't be able to help you once the forensic accountants finish reviewing the contents of that briefcase," Agent Miller said, motioning for two agents to take custody of Evelyn and the titanium case.
As Evelyn was led away toward one of the waiting SUVs, she cast one final, lingering look back at Elena. It was a look of pure, unadulterated hatred that sent a shiver down the young maid's spine.

"This isn't over, little girl," Evelyn whispered loudly enough for only Elena to hear as she was pushed into the back of the cruiser. "People like you never truly win."
