Chapter 12 - After the Storm

The chaotic commotion of the federal raid slowly subsided as the SUVs drove away, leaving behind an eerie, profound silence across the sprawling estate. The morning sun climbed higher into the clear blue sky, casting bright light over the manicured lawns and the grand double doors of the mansion.

Julian stood in the foyer where it all began, looking down at the pristine marble floor. The dark stain had been scrubbed away completely, leaving only a clean, polished surface reflecting the crystal chandelier overhead.

Agent Miller walked into the foyer, holding a manila folder containing the recovered documents. She handed it to Julian with a respectful nod. "Everything matches your preliminary inventory, Mr. Vance. The trade agreements are secure, and our cyber-division is currently scrubbing Evelyn's access credentials from your primary servers."

"Thank you, Agent Miller," Julian said, tucking the folder securely under his arm. "Will I need to make a formal statement at the bureau downtown?"

"Not today. We have all the physical evidence we need, including the chemical analysis of the silver nitrate residue recovered from the third-floor darkroom," Agent Miller replied, glancing briefly toward the grand staircase. "By the way, your head of security, Marcus Vance, is currently regaining consciousness under police guard in the basement. He has already agreed to cooperate in exchange for a reduced sentence."

Julian let out a long, weary breath, running a hand through his dark hair. "I appreciate your thoroughness, Agent. Keep me informed."

With a polite salute, Agent Miller turned and exited through the grand doors, leaving Julian alone in the vast, echoing foyer.

He looked around the empty room, realizing how hollow his pristine world truly was. For years, he had measured success in square footage, expensive tailored suits, and corporate dominance, entirely ignoring the human lives that quietly sustained his empire. His eyes drifted toward the side hallway leading to the domestic staff quarters.

Slowly, Julian walked down the corridor until he reached the small, modest sitting room where Elena was quietly packing her few belongings into a worn canvas duffel bag.

She wore a simple beige sweater and dark trousers, having finally discarded the torn black-and-white French maid uniform. The red scratch on her cheek was fading into a faint pink mark.

Julian paused in the doorway, knocking softly on the wooden frame.

Elena looked up, her expression calm, guarded, and entirely neutral. "Are you here to inspect my departure, Mr. Vance?"
