Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Shadows

Marcus Vance’s heavy boots crunched loudly on the concrete floor as he stepped into the weak circle of light cast by Julian's flashlight. He twitched the industrial wrench casually in his right hand, the steel head gleaming with a menacing dullness in the gloom.
"Well, well," Marcus said, his voice dripping with a mocking, familiar amusement. "Cousin Julian, I must admit, I expected you to spend at least another hour pounding on that darkroom door like an impatient child."
Julian instinctively stepped in front of Elena, placing his body between her and his armed cousin. He kept his hand resting casually near his concealed holster, his eyes locked onto Marcus's shifting stance. "You orchestrated the security blackout, Marcus. You helped Evelyn siphon the company accounts and doctor the trade agreements."
Marcus let out a short, dry laugh that echoed off the damp brick walls. "Family loyalty doesn't pay the bills, Julian. Not when you've been skimming off the top to fund your expensive hobbies for a decade while I did the actual heavy lifting running this estate's security network. Evelyn simply offered a more lucrative partnership package."
"She's using you, Marcus," Julian said, his voice measured and steady, cutting through the damp air. "The moment the international transfer clears, her offshore shell companies will sever all ties. You'll take the fall for industrial espionage and corporate treason while she flies to Zurich with the entire portfolio."
Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second, his grip on the industrial wrench tightening visibly before he shook his head, hardening his expression. "Don't try your boardroom psychological tricks on me, Julian. I've seen the wire confirmation codes myself. The funds are already moving."
Elena peered out from behind Julian’s shoulder, her eyes darting past Marcus toward the heavy steel exit door behind him. She noticed the small red indicator light on the door’s manual override box blinking intermittently.
"He's stalling," Elena whispered softly into Julian's ear, so quietly that Marcus could barely register the sound. "Look at his left hand. He's pressing a wireless transmitter in his palm. He's waiting for confirmation that Evelyn has cleared the main terminal upstairs."
Julian caught the subtle twitch of Marcus's thumb against his palm. Time was running out. If Evelyn completed the transfer, every asset Julian owned—including the land beneath their feet—would legally belong to a shell corporation controlled by his betrayers.
"It's over, Marcus," Julian declared loudly, taking a deliberate step forward. "The photographic plate is already in my possession. The chemical residue on your security logs has been recorded."
Marcus grinned, raising the wrench. "Then it's a good thing dead men—and inconvenient maids—don't testify in federal court."
May you like
Marcus lunged forward, swinging the heavy wrench in a wide, vicious arc aimed directly at Julian's head.
