Chapter 2 - The Red Signal

Glass rained down onto the sterile tile floor, tinkling like frozen rain. Lily shrieked in terror, ducking into Nurse Sarah’s chest. Dr. Gable instinctively shielded the child with his forearm, his gloved fingers dripping with sweat. Emergency backup halogens flickered to life across the bay, casting sickly yellow shadows across the walls.
"Code yellow, bay four! We have a fixture malfunction!" Sarah yelled toward the hallway station, but her words died in her throat as she looked back down at the gurney.
The split fleece boot hung open like a dissected wound. Resting in Gable’s gloved palm, the silver ring looked ancient, inscribed with a jagged wolf’s head biting a broken chain. The vacuum-sealed plastic packet contained something far worse than jewelry: a folded strip of thermal paper displaying Lily’s full name, her school schedule, and three high-resolution surveillance photos of their front porch.
Mark grabbed the bed rail to steady his spinning vision. "That... that's impossible. I bought those boots from a donation crate outside the church on Third Street. She begged for them because of the color."
"This isn't a church donation, Mr. Miller," Gable said quietly, peeling off his gloves with trembling urgency. "This compartment was professionally vulcanized into the polyurethane midsole. Someone built this to be carried across state lines. And that transmitter..."
The tiny red LED on the circuit board went solid. No more blinking.

From the corridor outside, a sharp thud echoed against the double security doors, followed by the muffled groan of an orderly. The heavy magnetic locks clicked open with an ominous pneumatic hiss, and the shadow of two men in dark tactical jackets stretched across the glass partition.
