The iron door slammed shut an instant before the grenade detonated, sending a concussive shockwave through the thick steel plate that rattled Mark's teeth in his skull.

They tumbled down into the dank, echoing cavern of the Victorian-era storm drainage system. Beneath their feet, knee-deep rushing water carried urban runoff toward the river. The air was thick with the smell of sulfur and decayed autumn leaves.

Helen collapsed onto an elevated concrete maintenance walkway, clutching her bleeding abdomen. Her breathing was ragged, wet, and shallow. "The key... Mark... take the ring..."

Mark knelt beside her, setting Lily safely against Sarah's knees. He looked down at the woman he had loved and grieved for two agonizing years. Up close, stripped of her suburban facade, she looked exhausted, hollowed out by deception.

"Why didn't you just come home?" Mark asked, tears finally breaking past his defenses. "Why let us mourn an empty grave?"

"Because you were safe as long as I was dead," Helen coughed, spitting blood onto the concrete. "The syndicate... they don't leave loose ends. The moment they realized Claire Miller had a family, you became targets. I thought... I thought if I used the shoes to smuggle the decryptor, I could pick it up without ever exposing you."

"You brought the war to our doorstep," Sarah said coldly, checking Lily's reviving pulse. "And now your war has cornered us in a sewer."

Helen smiled weakly, reaching into her tactical vest to pull out a small, palm-sized electronic detonator. "I didn't run down here to hide, Nurse. I ran down here because this tunnel passes directly under the municipal natural gas transfer valve."
