Chapter 11 - Fire from Above

The roof disintegrated in a hail of high-caliber armor-piercing rounds. Concrete pulverized into choking white powder as the drone's mounted machine guns tore through the rafters.

Mark dropped to the floor, rolling toward the counter to shield Lily with his own body. Plaster shards slammed into his back like shrapnel. Across the room, Helen fired three rapid shots through the skylight, but the small-arms fire bounced harmlessly off the drone's reinforced composite chassis.

"Out the basement tunnel!" Helen yelled, grabbing Sarah by the collar and shoving her toward a heavy iron cellar door. "It leads to the old municipal sewer main!"

A secondary explosion rocked the front lobby as a thermite charge breached the clinic's entryway. Through the smoke, four heavily armored operatives moved in tactical formation, their night-vision goggles glowing an eerie green.

Mark lifted Lily, wrapping her tightly in his blood-spattered coat. "Sarah, go! I'm right behind you!"

As Helen turned to fire a suppressive volley down the corridor, an operative's burst caught her in the side. She gasped, stumbling against the doorframe, dark crimson spreading rapidly across her charcoal coat. Mark grabbed her arm, hauling her through the hatch into the dark abyss below just as a fragmentation grenade bounced down the concrete steps.
