Chapter 15 - The Vanishing Trail

The scream wasn't born of panic; it was a piercing, instinctual cry of pure survival. As Lily shrieked, she kicked outward with her bare, chemical-stained heel, knocking the dropped electronic detonator off the ledge directly into the commando's boots.

Mark didn't hesitate. With his uninjured arm, he scooped Lily into his ribs, grabbed Sarah’s wrist, and dove sideways over the retention wall into the secondary outflow channel just as the commando's heavy combat boot accidentally crushed the detonator’s fragile trigger plate.

The world vanished in an apocalyptic flash of white fire and deafening thunder.

The natural gas line erupted in a chained sequence of concussive blasts. The storm tunnel collapsed inward, thousands of tons of brick, concrete, and street pavement raining down to seal the commandos in a tomb of fire.

The roaring surge of water carried Mark, Sarah, and Lily down the secondary bypass pipe, sweeping them half-drowned through darkness until the pipe vomited them out into the freezing, misty reeds of the outer harbor basin.

Coughing and retching brackish water, Mark dragged himself onto the muddy bank. Beside him, Sarah cradled Lily, both shivering under the cold glow of dawn breaking over the Atlantic horizon.

The city behind them was crowned with thick pillars of black smoke. The sirens were distant, muted, powerless.

Mark reached into his soaked pocket, his fingers brushing against something hard and metallic. His blood ran cold.

When Lily had kicked the detonator, she had caught something else with her toes. Pressed firmly into his palm was the silver signet ring with the wolf’s head, its microscopic data port blinking with a slow, hypnotic blue light that had never appeared before.

A low vibration buzzed from the center of the ring, and a synthesized voice whispered through a hidden pinhole speaker:

*"Authentication accepted. Target Lily Miller acquired. Commencing Phase Two."*
