Helen didn't lower her weapon. She merely shifted her stance, aiming the barrel directly at her former husband's chest. "You don't understand the scope of what we're dealing with, Mark. That ledger contains the identities of every compromised federal judge, police captain, and senator in this region. If I don't deliver that ring and data key to the safehouse tonight, none of us survive till dawn."
"You poisoned our daughter!" Mark shouted, his voice cracking with volcanic rage. "Look at her, Helen! She almost died on an ER table an hour ago!"
"It was an inert deterrent intended for interceptors," Helen insisted, though a microscopic tremor betrayed her trigger finger. "The seal wasn't supposed to be breached. The shears activated the fail-safe."
"She was terrified of those boots," Mark stepped closer, stepping over shattered plaster. "She told me all morning that something evil was inside them. Children know. They sense the rot you leave behind."
"Drop the pipe, Mark," Helen ordered, her voice hardening. "I won't let you ruin six years of undercover work for sentimental garbage."
A sudden sound shattered the standoff: the low whine of a military-grade drone hovering outside the ruined clinic. Red targeting lasers crisscrossed through the broken ceiling, painting dozens of scarlet dots across Helen's chest and Mark's shoulders.
