Chapter 5: Tearing Down the Walls

Over the next month, the Vance estate underwent a transformation that was more emotional than physical.

Amy began stripping away the cold, formal decor that Eleanor had curated for decades. The stiff, uncomfortable antique furniture in the living room was replaced with soft, plush sofas. The gloomy oil portraits of distant ancestors were moved to storage, replaced by warm, vibrant photographs of Leo, Amy, and Julian laughing together on the beach.

Julian had restructured his work schedule, handing over routine administrative duties to his vice president so he could be home by 5:00 PM every day. For the first time since they married, they ate dinner as a family in the small breakfast nook, sharing stories and laughing without the watchful eyes of strict house staff.

One afternoon, Amy sat on the sun porch, sketching in her notebook. Before marrying Julian, she had been a talented illustration student, a passion she had completely abandoned under Eleanor's insistence that ""art hobbies are uncouth for a woman of status.""

Julian walked out onto the porch carrying two iced teas. He leaned over her shoulder, looking at the sketch. It was a detailed, beautiful drawing of Leo playing with a wooden train set, the sunlight capturing every tiny detail of his soft curls.

""Amy, this is incredible,"" Julian said, genuinely amazed. ""You never told me you were this good.""

Amy blushed slightly, adjusting her pencil. ""Your mother said my art was a waste of time. She threw away my portfolio last year.""

Julian’s eyes darkened for a brief second at the mention of his mother, but he quickly replaced it with a smile. ""My mother was wrong about a lot of things. In fact, I think you should finish your degree.""

Amy looked up, startled. ""What? Julian, I have Leo to take care of...""

""And he has a father who can take care of him too,"" Julian replied warmly, sitting down beside her. ""We have help, we have resources. You sacrificed your dreams to step into my world, Amy. Now it's time for me to support yours.""

Tears sprang to Amy’s eyes, but this time, they were tears of pure joy. She reached out, wrapping her arms around his neck, feeling the heavy walls of her past fear crumble away entirely.
