Chapter 3: Feverish Whispers

Upstairs in the nursery, the air was warm and quiet, broken only by the rapid, shallow breathing of little Leo. Amy sat in the rocking chair, applying a cool, damp cloth to her baby’s forehead.

The door creaked open, and Julian stepped in softly. He looked at his wife—her posture slumped, her eyes red, but her attention entirely devoted to their son. A wave of profound guilt washed over him. He had been so focused on expanding Vance Enterprises, so distracted by corporate mergers, that he had missed the quiet terror Amy was enduring under his mother's roof.

He knelt beside the rocking chair, placing a warm hand over Amy’s knee.

""The doctor is on his way,"" Julian whispered. ""How is he?""

""His fever is 102,"" Amy said, her voice barely audible. ""He wouldn't stop crying earlier, Julian. I tried to tell your mother, but she told me I was being overly dramatic... she said a real Vance woman doesn't let minor inconveniences disrupt social obligations.""

Julian squeezed her hand, his heart breaking. ""I am so sorry, Amy. I failed you. I let her walk all over you because I thought... I thought she was just trying to help you adjust.""

""She hates me, Julian,"" Amy looked into his eyes, raw honesty filling her gaze. ""She looks at me and sees a poor girl from a small town who stole her golden boy. I tried so hard to be what she wanted. I learned the protocols, the etiquette... but it was never enough.""

""It ends tonight,"" Julian promised fiercely. ""She is leaving tomorrow.""

Amy looked surprised. ""Julian, no... she's your mother. I don't want to come between—""

May you like

""You aren't coming between anyone,"" Julian cut in gently. ""She destroyed this bond herself. My first duty is to you and Leo. You are my home, Amy. Not this house, not my mother's approval. You.""

A soft chime sounded downstairs—Dr. Miller had arrived. Julian stood up, kissing Amy’s forehead before heading down to lead the physician up. For the first time in months, as she looked down at her fragile baby, Amy felt a flicker of hope that the heavy darkness hanging over them was beginning to clear.
