Chapter 4: A New Morning

Morning light filtered through the sheer curtains of the master bedroom, casting a soft golden glow over the room. Leo’s fever had finally broken around 3:00 AM, thanks to Dr. Miller’s medication, and the baby was now sleeping peacefully in his crib.

Amy stood near the window, holding a cup of warm tea. She watched through the glass as two movers loaded several heavy leather trunks into the back of a luxury sedan parked in the driveway below.

Eleanor Vance stood beside the car, dressed in a sharp coat, looking up toward the house one last time. Her expression was cold, proud, but underneath it, Amy could see a deep, hidden sorrow—the isolation of a woman who had chosen pride over love her entire life.

Julian walked out to the car. Amy couldn't hear what was being said, but she watched the interaction closely. Julian offered a polite nod; Eleanor offered a stiff reply, turned, and stepped into the back seat. The car slowly rolled down the long driveway and vanished past the wrought-iron gates.

Julian came back upstairs, his footsteps heavy. He entered the bedroom and saw Amy watching him.

""She's gone,"" Julian said quietly, walking over to wrap his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

""Are you okay?"" Amy asked gently, turning her head to touch her cheek to his.

""I'm relieved,"" Julian admitted with a weary sigh. ""And sad. Sad that she couldn't see how wonderful you are. Sad that she let her obsession with status destroy her relationship with her only son.""

""Maybe she just needs time,"" Amy offered softly. ""People can change, Julian.""

Julian looked at her with admiration. ""After everything she did to you, you still have grace for her. You are remarkable, Amy.""

""I just know what it's like to feel alone,"" Amy replied softly. ""I don't wish that on anyone.""

Julian took the teacup from her hand, setting it on the dresser, then pulled her into a tight, meaningful hug. ""Starting today, things are going to change. No more grand galas we don't want. No more pretending. We are going to build a life that belongs to us.""
