Chapter 2: The Severed Thread

The silence in the dining room was suffocating. Eleanor slowly lowered her wine glass, her manicured fingers trembling slightly as shock turned into cold indignation.

""Julian,"" Eleanor said, striving to keep her voice smooth in front of her high-society friends. ""Do not create a scene. I am simply teaching your wife the standards required of the Vance name. A host does not abandon her guests.""

""My son is sick, Mother,"" Julian countered, his tone laced with iron. ""And my wife is not your servant.""

Julian turned to Amy, his eyes softening instantly. ""Take Leo upstairs. Call Dr. Miller right now. I’ll be up in a minute.""

Amy nodded, tears finally slipping down her cheeks, not out of weakness, but out of immense relief. Holding the infant close, she hurried out of the dining room and up the grand staircase toward the nursery.

Once Amy was out of earshot, Julian turned back to the table. The guests sat frozen, pretending to inspect their dinner napkins.

""The party is over,"" Julian announced, looking around the room. ""Thank you all for coming. Please see yourselves out.""

Murmurs erupted as the guests quickly stood up, offering awkward condolences before hurrying toward the foyer. Within five minutes, only Julian and his mother remained in the vast room.

""How dare you embarrass me in front of my peers!"" Eleanor hissed, stepping closer to her son. ""I brought you up to respect family legacy! That girl comes from nothing, Julian. She has no pedigree, no grace. I tried to mold her—""

""You tried to break her,"" Julian interrupted coldly. ""You've been subtly torturing her since the day we moved in here. You made her feel small, useless, and isolated. And I was too blind, too busy with the company to see it until tonight.""

""She is weak!"" Eleanor snapped.

""She is strong enough to bear the burden of a sick child while you treat her like a maid,"" Julian replied, his voice deadly quiet. ""Pack your bags, Mother.""

Eleanor blinked, processing the words. ""What did you say?""

""This estate was willed to me by Father,"" Julian said firmly. ""I welcomed you here out of respect. But that respect ends tonight. You will pack your things and move to the penthouse downtown by tomorrow morning.""

""You would kick your own mother out for her?"" Eleanor gasped, genuine shock breaking through her stoic mask.

""I am protecting my family,"" Julian said, stepping past her without another word. ""Just as a real man should.""
