Chapter 10: The Confrontation

The rain had turned into a steady drizzle by the time Julian arrived at Eleanor’s downtown penthouse. He didn't call ahead; he simply used his master key and walked straight in.

Eleanor was sitting in her pristine white living room, reviewing files provided by her private investigator. She looked up, startled by the sudden intrusion.

""Julian!"" Eleanor said, adjusting her pearl necklace, trying to regain her composure. ""What a pleasant surprise. I was just—""

Julian didn't let her finish. He walked over, picked up the file folder on her coffee table, and tossed it straight into the burning fireplace.

""Julian! What are you doing?"" Eleanor gasped, standing up. ""That was valuable—""

""That was garbage,"" Julian barked, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the penthouse. ""You hired a sleazy investigator to dig up dirt on my wife's family? You paid her criminal brother for gossip?""

Eleanor’s face hardened, dropping the motherly act. ""I did it to protect you! That woman comes from a family of thieves and deadbeats, Julian! Her brother has a criminal record! Her father died in debt! They are leeching off the Vance name!""

""Amy paid off her brother's debts with her own hard work!"" Julian shouted back. ""She survived a life you couldn't last a single day in! She has more honor, more grace, and more integrity in her pinky finger than you have shown in your entire life!""

""She is destroying your standing in society!"" Eleanor yelled, her voice screeching.

""No, Mother. You destroyed your standing in my life,"" Julian said, his tone suddenly dropping to a freezing, absolute quiet.

He stepped closer, looking down at the woman who had raised him. ""I came here to give you one final warning. If you ever contact Amy, if you ever look into her family, or if you ever breathe her name to the media, I will cut you off entirely. No trust fund, no penthouse, no Vance name. You will be dead to me.""

Eleanor froze, the color draining completely from her face. She realized, with a wave of sickening horror, that her son was not making a threat—he was stating a fact.

""Julian... please,"" Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking for the first time in her life. ""I am your mother.""

""Then start acting like one,"" Julian said coldly. He turned on his heel and walked out, leaving Eleanor standing alone in her vast, empty, silent apartment.
