Chapter 8: Digital Whispers

The glowing blue light of the intercom cast harsh shadows across Thomas’s face as the reality of David’s report settled into the room. Mei-ling stepped closer to the desk, her instincts immediately alert.
"Who had access to the basement archives at this hour?" Thomas demanded, his voice dropping into a register of cold, tactical command.
"According to the electronic key logs, the terminal was accessed using Arthur Sterling’s master administrative credentials," David replied crisply from the secure screen. "Furthermore, within three minutes of the data extraction, an encrypted data packet was routed through a proxy server to an external IP address registered overseas—specifically, to a shell corporation tied to Meridian Global, our primary corporate rival."
Thomas’s jaw clenched so hard muscles flickered along his cheek. "Arthur has officially crossed from family betrayal into treason. He’s selling our private restructuring data and your legitimacy to Meridian to destabilize our upcoming stock offering."
Mei-ling looked between the screen and her father, processing the immense scale of the conspiracy unfolding around her. "He’s trying to discredit my claim before the board can ratify it," she reasoned, her voice remarkably calm despite the gravity of the situation. "If Meridian releases the medical data to the financial press with manipulated timelines, they can frame my appearance as an elaborate insider hoax designed to artificially inflate Sterling stock."
David Chen blinked in surprise, casting an approving glance toward the young woman. "Precisely, Miss Mei-ling. Your assessment matches our internal threat models."
Thomas stood up, his towering frame exuding an intense, focused energy. "David, lock down all physical access to the basement levels immediately. Double the security detail outside Mei-ling’s residential quarters. I want a full forensic audit of Arthur’s terminal completed within the hour. We are going to corner him before he can transmit the remaining financial dossiers."
"Understood, Chairman. Moving teams into position now," David said before the screen flickered dark.
Thomas turned to Mei-ling, placing a heavy, reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You are no longer safe staying in standard accommodations, even with private security. Tonight, you will stay in the secure residential suite attached to this penthouse. It is completely isolated from the main building networks."

"I'm not running, Father," Mei-ling said firmly, though she did not pull away from his touch. "Running is what my mother and I did for decades. If Uncle Arthur is trying to tear down my existence to protect his power, then I need to be in the room when we dismantle him."
Thomas looked deep into her eyes, seeing the unmistakable stubbornness of the Sterling bloodline blended with her mother's unbreakable spirit. A slow, grim smile touched his lips. "Very well. Then you will sit beside me in the war room. It’s time our family learned what happens when they underestimate a Sterling."
