Chapter 10: The Unraveling

The war room fell into a suffocating silence. Even the servers seemed to quiet, leaving only the steady, rhythmic breathing of the occupants. Arthur stared at the decryption ledger resting on the polished wood between them. The smug defiance had entirely vanished from his features, replaced by the grim realization that his carefully constructed web of corporate sabotage and familial betrayal had been systematically dismantled.
Thomas watched his brother with a profound, aching sadness. "For twenty-four years, Arthur, you told me she was gone. You managed the hush money, you forged the separation notices, and you convinced me that my life belonged entirely to the dynasty." Thomas placed both hands flat on the table, leaning forward. "Why? Was my father's inheritance not enough for you? Did you truly hate Su-wen so much that you had to erase her existence?"
Arthur swallowed hard, his throat dry. He looked away from Thomas’s piercing gaze, staring out the reinforced glass window toward the distant horizon where dawn was just beginning to streak the dark sky with pale violet and gold.
"She wasn't one of us, Thomas," Arthur muttered, his voice cracking slightly, stripped of all corporate armor. "Our father built this empire on alliances, on bloodlines that secured political and financial dominance. A woman from a working-class textile background... she would have weakened your standing on the board. She would have opened the doors to vulnerabilities our competitors would exploit. I didn't destroy her life out of hatred. I did it to protect the Sterling legacy."
"You protected nothing," Mei-ling said sharply, stepping closer to her uncle. "You preserved a cold, hollow shell of power built on lies and stolen lives. My mother didn't want your empire. She wanted peace, dignity, and the man she loved. You robbed all three of us of that future."
Arthur finally turned his gaze back to Mei-ling. For the first time, he saw not a threat to his portfolio, but the living consequence of his ruthless calculus. He let out a dry, defeated chuckle, shaking his head slowly. "You have your father's stubborn eyes, girl. And his absolute refusal to bend."
Thomas stood up straight, his expression turning to stone. "David, escort Mr. Sterling to the private residential holding facility downstairs. Notify the board of directors that an emergency extraordinary session will commence at nine o'clock. The restructuring agreement, including the formal transfer of primary voting shares to my daughter, will be ratified today."

"You can't do this, Thomas," Arthur protested weakly as two security guards stepped forward, placing firm hands on his shoulders. "The board will tear the company apart over a contested bloodline."
"The board answers to the majority shareholder," Thomas replied coldly as his brother was led toward the heavy doors. "And as of this morning, I hold fifty-one percent—which I am assigning directly to Mei-ling."
