Chapter 7: The Unforgiven Debt

The heavy oak doors of the executive suite clicked shut, leaving Thomas and Mei-ling alone in the sprawling penthouse office. The city lights below twinkled like scattered diamonds, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished floor. Mei-ling walked slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, pressing her palms lightly against the cool pane, looking down at the microscopic movement of traffic far below.

Thomas approached her slowly, stopping a respectful distance away. He held two crystal tumblers filled with sparkling water, extending one toward her. She accepted it with a quiet nod of gratitude.

"You handled your uncle better than most seasoned executives do in their first board meeting," Thomas said, a faint, proud smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Arthur is a survivor of corporate politics. He views everything as an asset to be acquired or eliminated. You must be careful around him, Mei-ling. Now that your existence is public record, you represent a direct threat to his ambitions."

Mei-ling took a slow sip of the water, letting the chill settle her nerves. "I never wanted his ambition, Father. Or your empire, for that matter. This morning, I was just trying to pay for groceries and get home before dark. Now... now I feel like I'm standing on the edge of a cliff in a hurricane."

"I know," Thomas replied softly, his voice heavy with self-reproach. "And every part of this chaos is my fault. If I had searched harder twenty-four years ago, if I hadn't surrendered to my family's threats... you and your mother would have lived a life of comfort and safety. You wouldn't have known cold winters in cramped tenements or the humiliation of being targeted by people like Madam Vance."

"Don't," Mei-ling interrupted, turning to face him. Her dark eyes met his with startling clarity. "My mother never raised me to look backward with bitterness. We struggled, yes. But we had each other. We learned resilience. I am who I am because of those years. Don't try to buy back the past with corporate shares and penthouse apartments, Chairman Sterling."

Thomas flinched slightly at the formal title, though he knew he deserved the distance. "Call me Father. Or Thomas. Whatever feels right." He paused, setting his glass down on a nearby credenza. "And regarding Madam Vance—her boutique’s lease was terminated this afternoon. Her accounts have been flagged for compliance review. Justice, at least in the commercial sphere, has been served."

Mei-ling shook her head slowly. "Revenge doesn't fix what she did. It just proves that power talks louder than truth. But... I won't pretend I'm sad to see someone like her face consequences for treating people as disposable."

Before Thomas could respond, his private intercom chimed sharply. The secure screen on his desk lit up, displaying the face of his head of corporate security, David Chen. David’s expression was grim, his military posture rigid.

"Chairman, we have a breach," David reported without preamble. "Someone accessed the private medical records server from an unauthorized terminal in the basement archives. Specifically, the genetic verification files linking you to Miss Mei-ling."
