Chapter 6: Shadows in the Boardroom

The executive penthouse of Sterling Enterprises loomed sixty floors above the glittering expanse of the city, its glass walls offering a panoramic view of the twilight horizon. Yet inside the vast, minimalist conference room, the atmosphere was suffocating. The air conditioning hummed quietly, unable to cool the electric tension radiating from the long mahogany table.

Thomas Sterling sat at the head of the table, his posture rigid. To his right sat Mei-ling, freshly changed into a tailored charcoal blazer and silk blouse that Thomas had insisted on purchasing during an emergency afternoon fitting at an exclusive atelier. She looked out of place among the chrome and leather, her fingers nervously tracing the edge of the heavy silver plum blossom pendant resting against her collarbone.

Across from them sat Arthur Sterling, Thomas’s younger brother and the current Chief Operating Officer of the conglomerate. Arthur’s face was a mask of cold corporate diplomacy, though a slight twitch near his left eye betrayed his inner panic. He had received the emergency board notification an hour ago, summoning him to an unscheduled briefing regarding corporate succession and family heritage.

"Thomas, this is absurd," Arthur said, breaking the silence with a smooth, practiced laugh that lacked any genuine humor. He steepled his fingers, leaning forward. "You bring a complete stranger off the street, outfit her in designer clothes, and expect the board of directors to accept an unverified paternity claim based on a tattered photograph and a flea-market trinket? The legal implications alone—"

"Silence, Arthur," Thomas interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a razor. He did not shout; his restraint made the command infinitely more terrifying. Thomas slid a thick leather-bound dossier across the polished table, stopping it right in front of his brother's hands. "DNA samples were collected by my private medical team three hours ago. The cross-verification against my personal genetic file is ninety-nine point nine-nine percent. Mei-ling is my legal, legitimate daughter. And according to the original family trust established by our father, she is the primary heir to fifty-one percent of the voting shares."

Arthur’s hands trembled slightly as he pushed the dossier away without opening it. He knew the contents were irrefutable. His carefully constructed plans to consolidate absolute control of Sterling Enterprises upon Thomas’s eventual retirement had just evaporated into thin air. He looked at Mei-ling with a gaze dripping with thinly veiled contempt, though he quickly masked it with a paternalistic smile.

"My dear niece," Arthur said smoothly, shifting his performance toward Mei-ling. "Forgive your uncle. It is simply that the corporate world is a ruthless jungle. We must be rigorous with verification. Of course, if you truly are Thomas's child, we welcome you with open arms. But adjusting to this lifestyle... understanding the complex financial architecture of a multinational empire... it is not something one learns overnight. Perhaps a quiet junior advisory role in a regional branch would be suitable while you acclimatize?"

Mei-ling looked directly at her uncle. She did not cower under his patronizing gaze. Growing up in the harsh margins of society had taught her to read people long before she ever learned to read balance sheets. She recognized Arthur’s smile for what it was: a velvet glove hiding an iron fist.

"Thank you for your concern, Uncle Arthur," Mei-ling replied, her voice steady and clear, carrying an unexpected poise that made Thomas's chest swell with quiet pride. "I may not know the architecture of a multinational empire yet, but I know the value of hard work, and I know when someone is trying to sweep me under the rug."
