Chapter 9

The tension in the Vance family dining room was palpable enough to cut with a silver butter knife. The long mahogany table, set for a formal Sunday dinner that only two people were attending, felt cavernous and cold. Eleanor sat at the head of the table, cutting meticulously into a piece of roasted lamb, while Julian sat opposite her, pushing his food around his plate without taking a single bite.

"You’ve been spending an awful lot of time away from the estate this week, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice dangerously calm. "And my sources tell me you’ve been seen visiting the village archivist and talking to retired detectives."

Julian laid his fork down, the metallic clatter echoing in the quiet room. "I’m trying to get ahead of this catastrophe, Aunt Eleanor. If Maya takes this to the federal prosecutor, we won't just lose the estate; we’ll be facing criminal indictments for obstruction of justice and financial fraud."

Eleanor set her knife down with deliberate slowness, her eyes narrowing as she looked at her nephew. "That girl is an opportunist playing a bluff. She doesn't have the backing to sustain a federal lawsuit. Your grandfather built this family on strength, not panic."

"Grandfather’s strength was built on corruption and the disappearance of his own daughter," Julian said, his voice rising, carrying a sharp edge of long-suppressed resentment. "How can you defend what happened to Catherine? She was your sister, Eleanor. You watched her get erased from history because her existence inconvenienced the family portfolio."

Eleanor stood up so fast her chair tipped backward onto the Persian rug with a loud thud. Her face turned pale with fury, her elegant blonde updo trembling slightly as she pointed a manicured finger at him. "Do not lecture me on family loyalty! I sacrificed my entire life, my happiness, and my own ambitions to keep this estate solvent after our parents died. If I hadn't made the hard choices, we would be living on charity today!"

"There is a difference between sacrifice and cruelty," Julian replied quietly, standing up to meet her gaze. "And you crossed that line thirty years ago."

The dining room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Eleanor stood rigidly at the head of the table, her chest heaving as she realized that Julian was no longer her ally. The generational shield of the Vance family had shattered, leaving her entirely alone to face the reckoning that Maya had brought to their doorstep.
