Chapter 8

The morning sun broke through the gray clouds, casting long shadows across the manicured lawns as Julian drove his vintage Aston Martin down the winding estate driveway. His destination was the village notary’s office, a modest brick building that housed the historical records of every property transaction in the county dating back to the nineteenth century.

Inside, the smell of old paper and leather-bound ledgers welcomed him. Mrs. Gable, an archivist who had worked in the village since before Julian was born, greeted him from behind a tall wooden counter piled high with dusty folders.

"Mr. Vance," she said, adjusting her spectacles. "Unusual for a member of your family to visit the public records office in person. Usually, your lawyers send a messenger."

"I’m looking for the original 1994 amendments to the Blackwood-Vance land trust, Mrs. Gable," Julian said, resting his hands on the wooden counter. "Specifically, the appendix regarding the northern acreage."

Mrs. Gable’s expression tightened perceptibly. She looked around the empty room before leaning closer over the counter. "That appendix was pulled from our active files twenty-five years ago under an executive seal requested by your grandfather."

"An executive seal requires a judicial order," Julian noted. "Was one ever filed with the county clerk?"

"That’s the interesting part, Julian," she whispered, pulling a thin, yellowed index card from a drawer. "No judge’s signature is on file. The seal was processed using a ministerial override reserved for state emergencies. Somebody high up in the state attorney general’s office pushed that paperwork through without review."

Julian felt a chill run down his spine. The conspiracy ran much deeper than family greed; it touched the political infrastructure of the entire county. His grandfather had possessed influence that extended far beyond the iron gates of the estate, bending local and state authorities to protect the Vance empire at any cost.

"Can you print me a copy of the override log?" Julian asked.

Mrs. Gable hesitated, her wrinkled fingers hovering over the edge of the drawer. "If I do this, Julian, you and your aunt will be facing federal scrutiny, not just a civil lawsuit. Are you prepared to see the empire your family built dismantled brick by brick?"

Julian looked out the small dusty window toward the distant spire of the estate church. "The empire is already built on quicksand, Mrs. Gable. It’s time someone let the water in."
