Chapter 14

The village notary’s office was quiet as the morning sun streamed through its dusty windows. Mrs. Gable stood behind the high wooden counter, watching as Maya, Eleanor, and Julian entered in unison. The heavy leather folder rested between them on the wood, a tangible monument to a secret empire finally brought into the light of day.
"You brought the complete documentation, then," Mrs. Gable said quietly, looking at Eleanor with a mixture of professional respect and lingering surprise.
"Every single page," Eleanor replied, her voice firm and clear. "We are here to file the voluntary dissolution of the Blackwood-Vance land trust and register the property transfer to its rightful heir."
Mrs. Gable nodded slowly, pulling out the official registry books and opening them to a clean, empty page. She slid a heavy fountain pen across the counter toward Maya.
Maya picked up the pen, her fingers steady and sure. She did not hesitate as she signed her full legal name onto the registry line, the ink flowing smoothly across the paper. She then slid the pen to Eleanor, who took it without a tremor in her hand, adding her signature beneath Maya’s as a witness to the historic transition.
Julian stood watching, feeling a profound sense of peace settle over the room. The cycle of secrecy, manipulation, and buried pain that had defined the Vance family for three generations was officially broken. No more hidden ledgers, no more manipulated trusts, and no more ghosts haunting the north shore boathouse.

"It is done," Mrs. Gable announced, stamping the documents with the official county seal with a resounding thud that echoed in the quiet office.
They walked back out into the crisp autumn air together, the village street waking up to the gentle rhythm of a normal, unburdened day. The past could not be rewritten, but the future was finally clean.
