Chapter 1

The crisp autumn air of upstate New York carried the faint scent of damp pine and expensive champagne across the manicured lawns of the Blackwood Estate. Eleanor Vance stood rigidly by the edge of the glass-smooth lake, her manicured fingers clasped tightly together in front of her cream-colored tailored blazer. A diamond and sapphire brooch caught the harsh amber glow of the patio lanterns, rising and falling rapidly with every shallow, anxious breath she took. Fifty years of careful social climbing, calculated marriages, and polished etiquette had culminated in this exact, fragile moment. Across the crimson-draped catering tables, a jagged puddle of dark red wine bled into the plush fibers of the red carpet, surrounded by glittering shards of a shattered crystal flute.

Eleanor turned her gaze toward Julian, her thirty-year-old nephew, whose dark slicked-back hair and midnight velvet tuxedo seemed designed to project an effortless, aristocratic calm. Yet Julian’s jaw was locked tight, his eyes darting between Eleanor and the young woman standing only a few feet away. Maya, twenty years old with dark hair loosely framing her face and a sparkling black V-neck evening dress catching the moonlight, remained entirely unbothered. A delicate silver pendant rested against her collarbone, swaying gently as she tilted her head.

"What do you think?" Eleanor asked, her voice trembling slightly, betraying decades of hidden panic.

May you like

Maya did not immediately answer. She paused, letting the heavy silence stretch across the gravel path before she offered a serene, almost maternal smile directly to Julian. "What do you think?" she whispered softly, her voice carrying a quiet confidence that made Eleanor’s blood run cold.

The spilled wine on the ground was not a clumsy accident; it was a carefully orchestrated declaration of war. Maya had crossed a line tonight, bringing a buried past back to the surface of the Blackwood family’s gleaming lake. Eleanor’s chest tightened as she realized that her meticulously constructed world—built on secrets, forged wills, and silenced voices—was about to unravel. Julian stepped forward, a silent mediator caught in a crossfire of generational ambition and cold, calculated revenge. The gala around them continued its mindless chatter, oblivious to the storm brewing by the water’s edge. Eleanor knew she had to regain control, but Maya’s unnerving composure suggested she held cards they had never even known existed in the deck.
