Chapter 2

The chaotic energy of the gala hummed in the background like a distant, distorted radio frequency. Eleanor’s fury finally broke through her disciplined facade as she pointed a trembling finger directly at Maya’s face. The decades of accumulated privilege and bitter protection of the Vance name demanded a violent reaction, a snapping of the social contract that kept polite society functioning.

"You crazy woman!" Eleanor shouted, her voice cutting sharply through the ambient jazz music drifting from the terrace. "Was that not enough for you? Thirty years of building this legacy, and you stroll in here to tear it down with a glass of cheap merlot?"

Maya did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice to match the older woman’s rising panic. She simply stood her ground in the black sequin dress, her dark eyes reflecting the warm amber lights of the estate without a hint of fear. Julian shifted nervously beside them, his velvet tuxedo catching the moonlight as he reached out a gloved hand to restrain Eleanor’s arm. Nearby, a corporate sponsor and his visibly shaken wife stared awkwardly at the scene, whispering behind a cupped hand before stepping backward into the shadows of the marquee.

"Want try me again?" Maya asked softly, stepping forward with a predatory grace that defied her youth.

Her words were not a threat shouted in anger; they were a quiet, terrifying challenge. Eleanor pulled her arm away from Julian’s grip, her chest heaving as she processed the sheer audacity of the girl. This confrontation was no longer about a spilled drink or a ruined carpet. It was about the foundation of the Blackwood fortune, a foundation that Maya clearly believed was built on sand. Julian cleared his throat, finally stepping between the two women to block the view of the surrounding guests. He offered Maya a warning look, one born of a shared history that Eleanor had desperately tried to bury in the deep waters of the lake.

The autumn wind whipped across the lawn, carrying the chill of the coming night. Eleanor realized that ignoring the threat was no longer an option. Every guest at this anniversary gala was a potential witness to a crumbling empire. Maya turned away slowly, leaving the older woman trembling with a mixture of rage and profound dread. The game had officially begun, and the rules were entirely out of Eleanor’s hands.
