Chapter 8

The heavy oak doors of the Vance family library creaked open, admitting a slender shaft of dust-mote-filled sunlight into the dimly lit room. Julian walked over to the antique mahogany desk, running his fingers along the leather-bound volumes that lined the mahogany shelves. It had been nearly a month since the tragedy at the penthouse, and while Elena had finally returned home from the hospital, the atmosphere in the sprawling apartment remained heavy with an unspoken sorrow. She spent her days in the sunroom, wrapped in blankets, staring out at the lake, rarely speaking unless spoken to. Julian felt as though he were walking through a museum dedicated to a life that had already ended.

Seeking distraction from the crushing weight of his domestic reality, Julian had begun sorting through his late father’s private papers, looking for any historical context that might explain Victoria Sterling’s obsessive vendetta against their family. According to the psychiatric files uncovered during the police search, Victoria’s hatred wasn’t merely professional; it was deeply personal, rooted in a past generation that Julian had barely known.

Buried deep inside a locked leather briefcase at the bottom of the bottom desk drawer, Julian found an old, faded manila envelope labeled simply: Sterling & Vance, 1994. Inside were financial statements, legal correspondence, and a series of bitter handwritten letters between his father, Arthur Vance, and a man named Richard Sterling—Victoria’s father.

As Julian read through the documents, a shocking narrative began to emerge from the ink-stained pages. Decades ago, Arthur Vance and Richard Sterling had been equal partners in the early iteration of Vance Enterprises. They had built the company from the ground up, sharing every risk and every reward. But during a severe financial downturn in the late nineties, Arthur Vance had discovered that Richard Sterling was secretly embezzling company funds to cover personal gambling debts. Rather than turning him over to federal authorities, Arthur had forced Richard out of the partnership quietly, buying out his shares at a fraction of their true market value to protect the firm’s reputation.

Richard Sterling, disgraced and broken, had lost everything—his fortune, his standing in society, and eventually his life, passing away from a stress-induced heart attack just two years later. Victoria, who had been a teenager at the time, had watched her family’s legacy evaporate overnight while the Vance name grew richer and more powerful with every passing year.

Julian leaned back in his leather chair, the weight of the revelation pressing heavily upon his chest. Victoria’s entire life had been constructed around a singular, consuming obsession: to infiltrate the Vance dynasty, tear it down from the inside out, and reclaim the wealth she believed had been stolen from her father. The attack on Elena wasn't just a sudden burst of malice; it was the final, violent execution of a decades-long vendetta born of generational trauma and unforgivable betrayal.
