Chapter 2

The wail of approaching sirens cut through the crisp night air, growing louder by the second as emergency vehicles navigated the bustling streets below. Inside the penthouse, the silence was heavy, punctuated only by Elena’s shallow, ragged breathing and Julian’s urgent whispers as he pressed his hands gently over hers, trying to assess the extent of the damage. Blood stained his fingers, a stark reminder of the violence that had just shattered their meticulously constructed life. Julian looked up, his face pale and contorted with a mixture of terror and a rising, suffocating rage. He glared at Victoria, who had retreated toward the grand piano, her shoulders shaking with carefully measured sobs. She dabbed at her dry eyes with a silk handkerchief, playing the part of the distraught bystander to absolute perfection.
"Julian," Victoria choked out, her voice trembling with manufactured fragility. "I tried to stop her. She lost her balance. It was an accident, Julian. You have to believe me."
Julian didn't answer. He couldn't. His mind was racing through the impossibilities of her claim. Elena was cautious, grounded, and intensely protective of their unborn child. She would never simply lose her balance and hurl herself onto a glass table. The physical evidence scattered across the Persian rug told a very different story, one of sudden force and malicious intent. But there was no time for confrontation right now. The rhythmic pounding of heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway outside, followed by urgent shouting as paramedics and building security breached the double doors.
Medics rushed into the room, their professional detachment cutting through the emotional chaos. They immediately pushed Julian aside with practiced efficiency, assessing Elena’s vital signs and securing her onto a rigid spine board. One paramedic barked orders for trauma bags and immediate transport, noting the alarming drop in her blood pressure and the severe trauma to her abdomen. Julian stood up slowly, his legs shaking beneath him. He looked down at the blood staining his black tuxedo trousers, feeling entirely hollowed out.
As the medical team lifted Elena toward the elevators, she reached out blindly, her fingers brushing Julian’s wrist in a desperate, fleeting touch before she was wheeled away into the sterile hallway. Julian started to follow, but a firm hand caught his shoulder. It was a building security guard, pointing toward the ceiling dome camera.

"Mr. Vance," the guard said quietly, his voice grim. "The system captured everything. Every frame is saved on the central server."
Julian turned his gaze upward, watching the small red light blink rhythmically in the dimming light. A cold determination settled deep within his chest. Victoria watched him from across the room, her tears suddenly drying as she realized the invisible eye above had just sealed her fate.
