Chapter 5

The door to the nursery clicked open softly, revealing a room bathed in the warm, golden light of a late afternoon sun. Julian stood on the threshold, hesitant to cross the floorboards. The room was pristine, completely finished just days before the tragedy. A white crib stood against the far wall, draped in delicate pastel linens. A rocking chair rested gently in the corner beside a towering stack of storybooks, and a mobile of handmade wooden stars hung silently from the ceiling, waiting for a breeze that would never come. Every detail had been chosen with care and love, a physical manifestation of dreams that had now been violently extinguished.

Julian stepped inside, his footsteps soundless on the thick wool rug. He walked over to the crib, running his hand along the smooth wooden railing. The silence in the room was deafening, heavier even than the sterile quiet of the hospital corridors. Elena was still recovering upstairs at St. Jude, her physical wounds healing slowly under a battery of specialists, but her emotional state remained a fragile, guarded mystery. She hadn't spoken about the attack since waking up from sedation. She simply stared out the hospital window for hours on end, her eyes hollow, retreating into a fortress of grief that Julian could not breach.

A soft rustle at the door made Julian turn. Elena stood in the doorway, leaning heavily against the doorframe for support. She was dressed in a loose gray cardigan over simple sweatpants, her long brown hair pulled back into a messy knot. Her face was pale, devoid of any makeup, and the dark circles beneath her eyes spoke of endless, dreamless nights. She looked around the nursery, her gaze sweeping over the empty crib, the stack of books, and the motionless mobile.

Julian rushed to her side, offering his arm to steady her. "Elena," he murmured softly. "You shouldn't be out of bed. The doctors said you need rest."

Elena didn't look at him immediately. She continued to gaze into the room, her breath hitching slightly in her throat. When she finally spoke, her voice was barely more than a whisper, fragile as spun glass. "I can still feel her, Julian. Every time I close my eyes, I feel her kicking. And then I remember the glass."

Julian wrapped his arms around her, pulling her gently against his chest. He buried his face in her hair, fighting back the burning tears that threatened to break through his hardened resolve. "I am so sorry, El. I am so, so sorry."

"Victoria wants everything," Elena said, her voice hardening just a fraction, a spark of life returning to her eyes. "She told me that night before she pushed me. She said Vance Enterprises was built on stolen ground, and that she was taking back what was rightfully hers. She didn't just want to hurt our baby, Julian. She wanted to destroy us entirely."

Julian held her tighter, the warmth of her body a stark reminder of what they still had left to fight for. "She won't get away with it, El. I swear to you, she will lose everything."
