Chapter 12

The jury deliberated for less than four hours—a swift, decisive rejection of the defense’s elaborate spin. By late afternoon, the buzzer echoed through the courthouse corridors, summoning the legal teams, the press, and the public back into the crowded courtroom. The atmosphere was thick with tension as Judge Thomas took his seat on the bench, his expression grave and composed.

Victoria Sterling stood up at the defense table. For the first time throughout the entire trial, her hands were trembling slightly as she buttoned her charcoal blazer. Her lawyers stood beside her, their expressions grim, already calculating the grounds for a lengthy appeals process. Across the aisle, Julian and Elena sat shoulder to shoulder, their breathing shallow and synchronized.

"Has the jury reached a verdict?" Judge Thomas asked, his voice echoing in the silent room.

The jury foreperson, a middle-aged man with graying temples, stood up and handed a crisp white envelope to the bailiff, who carried it up to the bench. Judge Thomas unfolded the paper, read through the handwritten words carefully, and handed it back to the bailiff to be delivered to the court clerk.

"On the first count of aggravated battery of a pregnant person resulting in severe bodily injury," the clerk read clearly, "how does the jury find the defendant?"

"Guilty, Your Honor," the foreperson replied without hesitation.

"On the second count of unlawful termination of a pregnancy through criminal acts," the clerk continued, "how does the jury find the defendant?"

"Guilty, Your Honor."

A low murmur rippled through the courtroom gallery, quickly silenced by a sharp rap of the judge’s gavel. Victoria closed her eyes for a brief second, her jaw tightening as the reality of her defeat settled over her like an iron shroud. There would be no corporate takeover, no reclaimed inheritance, and no escape from the consequences of her violence.

Judge Thomas looked down from the bench, his gaze locking onto Victoria. "Mrs. Sterling, in light of the unanimous verdict of this jury, and the overwhelming evidence of premeditated malice, I am revoking your bail effective immediately. Sentencing is scheduled for four weeks from today. Take the defendant into custody, bailiff."

Two county deputies stepped forward immediately, their hands resting firmly on Victoria’s arms. She didn't resist. She cast one final, venomous glare toward Julian and Elena across the courtroom—a look of pure, unadulterated hatred that proved her spirit was unbowed even in defeat—before she was turned around and led through the side doors toward the holding cells.

Julian let out a long, shuddering breath that felt as though it had been trapped in his chest for months. He turned to Elena, taking her face gently in his hands. Tears finally spilled over her eyelashes, but for the first time, they were tears of release, of closure, and of an agonizing healing process that could finally begin.
