Chapter 1

The heavy mahogany doors of the penthouse living room slammed shut, echoing against the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the glittering expanse of downtown Chicago. Julian Vance stood frozen on the threshold, his black tuxedo jacket slightly askew, his black bow tie undone at the collar. He stared in absolute disbelief at the scene unfolding before him. Shards of a massive, custom-built glass coffee table littered the plush Persian rug like diamonds scattered in the moonlight. Among the jagged remnants lay Elena, his pregnant wife, dressed in a simple, flowing white nightgown. Her long brown hair was tangled across the glass, and her hands clutched her lower stomach as a low, agonizing groan escaped her lips. Blood began to seep slowly through the pristine white fabric of her gown, pooling against a sharp shard of transparent debris.

Standing just a few feet away, Victoria Sterling caught her breath. Her long maroon off-the-shoulder velvet dress pooled dramatically around her heels, the dark fabric stark against the neutral tones of the modern decor. Her dark lipstick was slightly smeared at the corner of her mouth, and her breathing was heavy, uneven, but entirely devoid of remorse. Only moments earlier, her voice had cut through the silence of the high-rise apartment with venomous clarity, declaring that Elena was never meant to stay. Now, as the heavy air grew thick with tension, Victoria transitioned seamlessly into a masterclass of psychological performance. She pressed her hands dramatically to her chest, her dark eyes welling with sudden, theatrical tears as she began to sob, rocking backward slightly on her high heels.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. His chest tightened with a suffocating panic that paralyzed his limbs for a few crucial seconds. He looked from Victoria’s manufactured grief to the raw, genuine agony etched across Elena’s pale face. Elena’s eyes met his, wide with shock, betrayal, and a silent plea for help that cut straight through his soul. Julian rushed forward, dropping to his knees on the hazardous glass without a single thought for his own safety. He ignored the sharp edges biting into his palms, focusing entirely on reaching his wife. Victoria continued to weep softly in the background, carefully curating her position beneath the soft glow of the recessed ceiling lights. Above them all, unnoticed in the quiet panic of the room, a sleek white security dome camera mounted in the corner blinked with a steady, mechanical red light, quietly recording every single second of the tragedy unfolding below.
