Chapter 9 - Descent into the Hive

The Gulfstream touched down at Teterboro Airport at 2:00 AM. Manhattan loomed on the horizon like a mountain of glass and tungsten, its glittering towers mocking the darkness below.
Ethan sat in the back of a second armored SUV, flanked by two of Victoria's heavily armed mercenaries. Mercer rode ahead in a lead car. Ethan's mind worked with machine-like speed, analyzing every variable.
He knew Pierce Tower better than anyone alive. He knew the maintenance passages, the auxiliary power grids, and the proprietary security protocols he had personally rewritten after Mark Davies's betrayal. Mercer believed he held all the cards because he held Ethan's family. But Mercer had forgotten one fundamental truth: Ethan Pierce had built the tower into an impregnable fortress specifically to prevent men like him from taking it.
The SUV entered the underground parking concourse of Pierce Tower through the private executive entrance. The hydraulic steel bollards lowered, granting them entry into the subterranean levels.
The concourse was eerily quiet. The night shift security was minimal, compromised by Mercer's insider access credentials.
Mercer stepped out of his car, holding a reinforced carbon-fiber briefcase. "Sub-basement four, Ethan. Let's make this quick. Victoria has already landed at the staging facility in New Jersey. She checks in every twenty minutes. If I miss a signal, the little girl gets put into an industrial shipping container bound for Rotterdam."
Ethan stepped out of the vehicle, his face an emotionless mask. "Lead the way."
They entered the private service elevator. Mercer swiped a master override card, pressing the key for Sub-Basement 4—the deepest, most secure level of the skyscraper, built directly into the Manhattan bedrock.
The elevator descended rapidly. When the doors slid open, they stepped into a cold, concrete corridor lined with heavy copper conduits and hydraulic pipes. At the end of the hall stood a massive, circular blast door constructed from foot-thick tungsten-carbide alloy.
In the center of the door were two biometric consoles: one thumbprint scanner, and one dual-spectrum retinal scanner.
"You first, Ethan," Mercer said, gesturing with his pistol while the two mercenaries took positions behind him. "Activate the primary circuit."
Ethan walked up to the scanner. He placed his thumb against the glass panel.
The console chimed, glowing blue.
*PRIMARY BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED. WELCOME, ETHAN PIERCE.*
*SECONDARY BIOMETRIC REQUIRED: VICTORIA PIERCE.*
Mercer pulled an insulated cryo-container from his briefcase, opening the lid with a mechanical hiss. Inside, resting in liquid nitrogen, was a synthetic silicone duplicate of Victoria's hand, embedded with her authentic genetic tissue and dermal ridges.
"She planned ahead," Mercer laughed quietly.
He reached to press the duplicate hand to the scanner.
Ethan's eyes caught a faint yellow reflection in the console glass—a microscopic fiber wire he had installed during the tower's security overhaul six months ago.

It was a dead-man's fail-safe. If triggered incorrectly, the blast door didn't open. It sealed the room and vented the entire sub-basement with liquid nitrogen to preserve the data servers from hostile capture.
